Is the button issue resolved now?

After receiving a 945 a couple of months ago and seeing reports here of buttons not clicking that the up and down buttons on mine were quite squishy.

i didn't see much point exchanging at the time as replacements looked to be the same or worse.

Wondering at this stage if the issue has been fixed 100% or is it still current on new ones as otherwise this one is working ok.

For me the down button clicks if left a couple of seconds between pushes while the up button never clicks.

i'd like to know I'm getting one that's better before swapping otherwise it's not worth the inconvenience.

I'm in Australia if that makes any difference to the batches being sent out.

  • My wife got a new Rev D 945 a month ago from a local dealer and the buttons are quite bad. We consider going through the replacement process with Garmin.

I replaced my Rev C watch in September with a Rev D version and the buttons are (still) ok - the start-stop button is a little bit mushy, but not as bad as the up & down buttons of my previous Rev C. I don't think you can assume that all Rev D watches are ok.

  • I have a fenix 5 plus and have kicked around upgrading to the 945; this is a great watch, but am interesting in going back to a lighter watch.

My wife has a 935 with perfect buttons, but only because I exchanged the original 935 due to mushy/sticking buttons.  Wish there was a way I could put my fenix buttons in a 945, this thing is indestructible.

My issue is, and why sticky buttons are such a deal killer, is I often hit the 'lap' button during sprints, or high intensity intervals.  I can't have the 'lap' button stick in particular.  Has anyone had any success in a homebrew fix for this, e.g. letting it soak in Dawn and water all night and pressing the buttons underwater to work the dirt/sweat/grime loose?  I really don't want to sell a perfectly functioning fenix only to be stuck with a problem child where I'm eternally playing watch roulette with Garmin (been there all too recently...).   Thanks!

  • There's a world of difference between the 'feel' of the buttons and the failure of a button to do what it is supposed to do. So, if you have a button that is not working properly - you press it and it does not do what it's supposed to do or sticks - you need to contact Garmin Support and discuss the issue with them. There should be no need to soak in warm water or whatever other solutions are suggested to fix an improperly functioning button. It either works properly or it does not.

How it 'feels' is subjective and another matter entirely.

  • I get what you're saying, but in my opinion, "feel" is not subjective at all.  Does the button have travel and is there feedback so I know it's pushed in?  It's pretty easy to quantify.  When I'm running full out and need to hit lap, I shouldn't have to look down at my watch so I know the button press was successful.  My old 935 that got sent back, there was very little travel in the lap button, and as a result, sometimes the button registered, sometimes not.  These are not inexpensive watches, and this is not something acceptable in a device marketed toward serious athletes.  Garmin clearly knows the solution based on the fact that their other watches don't seem to have this issue, so it's a bit disappointing that yet again, the issue that also plagued the 935 had this problem resurface yet again with near-launch units on that watch's successor.

My point isn't to tar and feather the company (clearly I have a Garmin addiction, after all!), it's to determine whether or not this is going to be a deal killer for me if I go ahead and trade my trouble-free fenix for this watch.

  • This is just an opinion, coming from someone who had a replacement because of this button issue: at best, with this size of buttons, the feedback can only be "okay". When you're running like mad during your interval training, you need bigger, firmer buttons.

I realise that the fenix buttons on the forerunner would look ugly, but for this "extreme" (yet fairly predictable) use case, it would be best...

So I kind of cut some slack to garmin, they had some tough design choices to make, and it's "okay", it's a compromise. I hope they will do better in the next version but in the meantime, if you are happy with the extra bulk and weight, go for the fenix, if like me you can't put up with it, the forerunner is an amazing watch.

  • Thanks for the feedback; I had a 645, which was ok in the button department, but with this Fenix I KNOW the laps register.  It’s just a little irritating that the light watches that runners are going to want have the crap buttons.  I don’t care if it’s ugly!  Stuck out tongue winking eye  No, assuming they have a good Black Friday sale, I’ll jump on a 945.

  • I don't believe there's a button issue just because there isn't a click.  I've had a 935 for 2 1/2 years and the 945 for 7 months.  The buttons on both work exactly the same way.  They both seem "squishy" as people call it.  I've read that the 935 also had this "fault" and some will say I have two faulty watches.  I've never had a button on either watch fail me and not do what it's designed to do.  If it doesn't click, it doesn't mean it's defective.  If you want a watch that clicks, just exchange it.  To me the click is just cosmetic, for a lack of a better word.  I have my watch set to vibrate anytime I hit a button, so the click feedback, or lack of, doesn't affect me.

  • So I'm assuming that even with a Rev D there's still button problems.

  • On one side of the box it says Rev A but on the part of the box you circled it says Rev D...which is correct?

  • I sold my 945 (black version) in August. I wanted to switch to the Fenix line, but after some month with a Fenix 3 and then with a Fenix 6X I realized, that the 945 is a much much better choice if you want to track swimming and sleeping. The slim and light design of the 945 is invaluable. So I sold the Fenix and picked up the 945 again in a Black Friday discount. This time I went with the Tri Bundle. I got my new watch 2 days ago, and it is really fantastic. The new features (graphical datafields, PacePro, wrist HR during swimming, etc.) are really welcome, and the buttons are wonderful. So much better than on my first 945 that I bought in May. This time I got a Rev D model, and the buttons are as expected, they give a definite click feedback. I hope they remain that good. I am so lhappy that I bought this model again. The improvements are really noticable. Slight smile
I just wanted to share my good experience.
