Treadmill distance way off, calibration making things even worse.

So, of course, you can never know if a treadmill is counting the distance perfectly. But the ones I've been using for years have reported distances consistantly, and on par with my outdoor running distance/time. And my FR 235 did a good job estimating Treadmill distance, consistently reporting around 0,95 km per 1 km on the teadmill.

The FR 945 is a completely different story. It started of recording about 1,4 km per 1 km on the treadmill on my standard 5 km @ 4:30 min/km. Using the Calibrate after saving function doesn't make things any better, actually they are getting worse! Today (fw 2.80 on the watch) every 1 km on the treadmill was more than 2 km on the watch, resulting in a world record over 10k at 21:19 min - WOHOOO!  Disappointed

As I understand the concept of calibrating, the watch should take the distance I put in when calibrating, and use it together with the number of steps measured for the same workout to get a new stride length for better treadmill distance calculation in the future? Or does the calibration feature only edit the distance for that specific run?

The only setting that I've found that could mess things up is the optional manual stride length for walking in Garmin connect app, but I have that one of, and it shouldnt be relevant for tredmill running nayway?

This problem seems widesperad on the FR245, is it equally bad for everyone on FR 945?

  • Hi Blake. Any news on this issue?  Thanks?

  • Does the new firmware 3.30 fix this issue?

  • Fenix 5X and my stats are a mess.  Hard to make progress when your stride length and pace are all over the map.

  • I quote the changelog:

Brought in treadmill calibration improvement. There is an additional issue with calibration that is being actively investigated for release

So i think it is better, but not 100% perfect

  • I have been on 3.30 (fenix 5x plus) for several runs and it doesn't look any better so far.  I calibrate every time and ran outdoors a couple times this past weekend.

  • Exactly the same. Is your issue fixed

  • I’m on a Fenix 6S running Software Version 4.30, and I have the same treadmill calibration issues as the other users on this forum.  Have run multiple outdoor/GPS runs (where the distance the watch is reporting is generally accurate) and multiple treadmill runs (calibrating after each run), and there has been no improvement in the accuracy of the distance reported.  Today’s 4.47 mile run came in at 5.41 miles on the watch.

  • Got the FR945 Tri-Bundle last week, but after reading about this treadmill calibration issue I have kept it in the box ever since. As someone else mentioned; this is a total disaster for a $750 sports watch. I'm going to return it and stick to my $150 VivoActive  (!) for now. The treadmill issue is comparable to selling a car that is unable to drive in an indoor parking garage.

I can also respect the argument that adding new features before fixing basic functionality seems offensive to everyone who have already made the switch. How can Garmin prioritize to allocate development resources to adding stuff and leaving the FR945 crippled for a lot of use cases? The fact that this is a problem shared with the Fenix range only adds to the severity of the blunder.

And this rant so far dosent even take into consideration the price point Garmin is targeting with his defective hardware. Compare the hardware you get from Garmin at $750 to a $750 laptop, a $750 flat screen, a $750 cell phone, a $750 tablet, a $750 drone or a $750 action cam.

On that thought I think I'm not going to even reconsider going for Garmin even when the Treadmill issue gets resolved.

  • Having the same problem as everyone else on my Fenix 5X. It used to be just a little off (a few hundredths) for my treadmill runs, but lately it is off by miles. Did all the resets, etc. Hope Garmin fixes it soon as I train for marathons on a treadmill. Pretty bummed about Garmin products right now.

  • My first Garmin 945 would let me adjust the distance to correct it, but my replacement after first one died is all over the place and won't let me change it.
