945 appears to have lost GPS 32 metres into Open Water Swim

Hi guys

Another potential issue here.

I used my 945 for the first time in a lake swim, and after swimming for 1h 7 m and what should have been a 3100 metre swim only recorded as 32 m on the watch.

On checking on Garmin Connect this morning, it only recorded the first 32 metres of the swim and then seems to have lost GPS.

I have recorded stroke rate however through the swim and of course, pressed the lap button on each lap. So the watch was still actively recording the swim, just not the distance.

I am swimming again on Saturday or Sunday, so i will update further if this issue continues.

If it does, I will log it with Garmin.

Regards

James

  • Guess you missed the running / riding bit...

  • I wondered why I put LOL Innocent

  • And how will they know this if nobody reports problems?

By reading the forums. By looking at the data that they collect.

There are ways to catch these without me needing to try to get support for them.

Also having some global bug program, so that the everyone's experience reporting bugs would be the same. The programmers doing the software are probably mostly in one location and having too many layers between them makes things unefficient and more layers means more ways to lost the real information.

  • Because you had nothing more useful to contribute?

I experience more jagged swim tracks during swimrun swims and just standalone ow swim or triathlon swim.

Byt I have only done swimrun swims this year so maybe standalone and triathlon swims have changed?

Hade huge pro lems with all types of ow swims last year. Got a little bit better later in the summer.

This year so far my swimruns have recorded fine.

Here is today's mini swimrun race:

  • What is you GPS mode on Open water?

    GPS+GLONASS

I manually switched between run and swim and switched to swim about 5m from the water. There was also approx 10m in the water before the actual swim began. So plenty of time to get a position fix befor the watch entered the water.

  • I've been using GPS+Galileo and same thing, manual switch on the shore before going slowly in, but still it managed to lost the starts 2/4 times. Maybe I'll change my OW to that and see what happens next time.

  • Hi there,

8 out of 10 times the open water tracking is way off. Even in relatively short swims (1200m) it records 15-20% less meters than others with who I swim. I also know the distance where I swim pretty well as I've been swimming there for many years.

It's pretty disappointing as I have to share my data with a coach and it always shows I swim much slower than what I actually do.

I understand I can edit the meters on the Garmin Connect app but that's not the point after spending more than 500€ on a device.

I've seen other posts about this issue but they are all from many months ago.

HAS ANYONE BEEN ABLE TO FIX THIS ISSUE?

I DID REPORT IT TO GARMIN AS WELL

    Thanks for your help

    Anthony

  • So some more swimming. Now with GPS + GLONASS in Open Water's GPS setting, so first times seems better than GPS + Galileo, but so small sample size that we'll see.

Openwater: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/5074183866 - This is surprisingly good! I'm surprised. No complaints from this one.

Swimrun: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/5081587796/2 - Better than last time, but still it struggles in the start of the swims, even if I change it on the land... like this one:
