FR 745: Inaccurate Training Effect (affecting Training Load Focus)

I have a constant shortage in low aerobic and anaerobic training load.

Slow recovery runs in zone 1 and 2 are categorized as "Pace" runs and add only to the "high aerobic" focus. "Low aerobic" does not even increase by a single point in these cases.

Yesterday, I did a track workout with 3.0 anaerobic effect (also categorized as anaerobic by Garmin Connect). Nearly 1/3 of the workout was in zone 5. Guess what? Not a single point was added to "anaerobic" in training focus - everything went to "high aerobic".

I know, the classic explanation is that the HR-zones are not set correctly, but in my case, I double-checked this. The zones are based on lactate threshold calculated by my HRM-Pro. The maximum heart rate is based on a recent 5k race.

Should I submit a bug report? I have seen similar threads already for other Forerunner devices here on the Garmin forums and on Reddit. Something seems odd with the recent firmware versions, but I am unable to tell when it started...

  • I don't see "Pace" as a training effect category, are you referring to "Base" or "Tempo"? Or is it just a language translation issue? Yes, I've seen other threads complaining about the same thing.

One thing to note is that the load numbers are on a 28-day moving window, so you have to take into account that numbers from 29 days ago are subtracted

  • It's actually called "Pace" in the Garmin Connect workout details and "Tempo" on the watch itself. Not sure why they did not align both expressions, this would be less confusing.

I now that the load numbers are based on a moving window. But when a load score stays exactly the same before/after a workout, it is rather unrealistic that it's caused by a past workout which has exactly same score as the workout just performed.

  • I've been noticing the same thing on my 745: easy base runs being marked lately with a Tempo primary benefit.

I'm curious, do either of you have threshold detection turned on and had a threshold Pace/HR detected in the past with a heart rate strap? I am wondering whether the detected threshold Pace (or HR) is used to determine Tempo vs Base primary benefit. My Threshold pace does not seem to be detected correctly (my actual pace is 10 to 15 seconds faster per mile), and I wonder if that throws off the Primary Benefit calculation.

I'm considering doing a full reset of my device to clear it out to see if that helps.

  • The problem seems quite widespread, there are similar threads for other Forerunner models already and the issue has also been mentioned on Reddit a few times.

Regarding your question: i have threshold detection turned on - I am using a HRM Pro. My initial threshold has been detected by the dedicated LT test of my FR745. It has been refined several times when my fitness increased. The threshold pace seems quite realistic in my case. Have you tried to do another LT-test?

My HR-zones are based on my LT and the maximum HR has been detected during a recent 5k race.

When the problem first appeared, I went back to an older FW (10.04 I guess) before the adjustments to the training load calculation are listed in the change log. The problem went away, but I had to reset my watch. Then I went back to 11.10 (and a recent beta FW) and the problem is back again.

  • Great analysis. Thanks for sharing. I agree that based upon this, it seems to be FW related.

  • Hello All,

This sounds like it may be related to similar reports related to how Training Effect is being calculated.  (See below)

So that I may assist you further, please reply with the following:

    1. May we, if necessary, have permission to email you?
    2. May we, if necessary, have permission to view/access your Garmin Connect account?
    3. In what country do you live?
  • 1. Sure, if you have a way to get my email or direct message me through this board.

    2. Yes

    3. US

  • 1. Yes

    2. Yes.

    3. Germany

  • This seems promising (quoting from the release notes of v11.52 beta):

"Fix a bug that could cause inaccuracies in the reported primary benefit for Training Effect."

    Any experiences already?

  • All,

Please see our recently released beta software for a fix addressing this report. If you prefer to not install this beta software, we hope to be rolling out a public software update soon, though I do not have a timeline for this release. If you are still seeing this issue after installing the beta software, please contribute your observations in the appropriate beta bug reports section of the beta forums for your specific device.
