Personal record 1 km after workout

Hi all! Today I had a workout as follows:

- run 3 kms 5:55/km

- 8x80meters 4:34/km, 4:20/km, 4:19/km, 4:27/km, 4:23/km, 4:36/km, 4:27/km, 4:35/km, with walking 8x80 (after one run, I had one walking, for 8 times). Walking at about 8:30/km

- run 2 kms 5:19/km

At the end, Garmin assigned a new personal record over 1 km, as 4:58/km

I do not understand how it is evaluated. Are the repeats involved in the record calculation? It seems to me strange as I think 1 km record should be made of continuous run, without walking...

Thanks

  • You could probably beat your own record by doing a continuous run, but you are free to walk when setting new records as long as you are faster than before.

  • I'm guessing you set the record during those 3 or 2 km runs. Have you looked at the statistics of those runs in more detail?

  • I found 4:58 in the last km, but not in the column "average pace" but in the column "GAP average".... what this means?

Another question: the record over 1 km, how is it evaluated? my lap is 1 km.... from lap to lap exactly evaluated or can be from "inside" a lap to the following lap until 1 km is completed? I hope my question is clear ;-)

    Thanks!

  • GAP means Grade Adjusted Pace, which is an estimate of what your pace would have been if it was flat.
The personal record can from inside a lap.

  • So this means that Garmin took a personal record considering GAP: is this acceptable? shouldn't the real pace be considered, instead?

Regarding the second question, let's suppose to run two kms, so two laps.

I run 400m of the first lap at low speed, then I increase the speed until 800m of the second lap. I ran 1400 m at high speed and the record should be in that distance?

Which parts are considered for the record? How the record has been evaluated? Is the Garmin considering the best 1km inside the total run at high speed of 1400m?

    Thanks!

  • No, GAP numbers are not used for records. During your workout, you did run/walk 1 km at your record time. Your entire workout is tested for records, including pause time.

  • I would also like to know if Garmin is looking for a record in any continuous section (here 1000 m), or if it only looks at lap times. Otherwise, I noticed that Garmin rounds differently in different reports, so if you have a time of 4:57 or 4:59 in a kilometer lap, that could also be the record lap.

  • It does not look at only lap times. It can be any section in your workout.

  • Here attached the detail of the run, I can't see where the record 4:58 for 1 km is..... ;-)

Furthermore, the run was always on flat, so why GAP sometimes is much different from pace?

  • Maybe easier to guess on a pace per time graph.
Or upload to Strava. They will show you exactly where the fastest 1K in your workout was.
