Can't Acquire GPS Fix last few days

Since Monday my 255 Music is unable to aquire a GPS fix, despite being in the latest software version and in a clear view of the sky for more than 30 minutes.

Last Sunday everything worked as normal, with a fix being acquired within seconds. But now it seems impossible.

Anybody else with this issue?

  • I mean, I just can't understand how it stops working consistently from one day to the other, and the only attempt at a solution is to reset the watch. And when that doesn't work, the only thing they can do is a replacement.

I'd appreciate some other way to debug this issue, or at least try to understand what's going on. Because if this can just happen all of the sudden without a software update, what's stopping a replacement from having the exact same issue after the 3 month warranty window and having to go through this again.

I'm going to send my watch to a certified repair center near me and hope that they can figure out what's wrong and fix it. Otherwise I guess I'm out of luck since it's out of warranty. I'll update this thread once I get it back.

  • You are absolutely right, it is  unacceptable they sent me another watch but I am sure that it is not a hardware related problem but something related to some cached data.

  • I just got my watch back from Garmin's official repair service where I live. They couldn't diagnose what's wrong with it, and suggested replacing the main board and internal components. I was quoted about 70% of what a new 255 Music costs, so of course I didn't go through with it.. at that point I might as well just buy a new watch.

So after about a month I'm still dealing with this issue, which is very frustrating. I'm convinced it's a software issue, because if it was something wrong with the chip itself, it would either never get a fix, or it would cut out while doing an activity (which it doesn't. When I'm lucky enough to get a fix, I can do whatever training I have to without worrying about it cutting out).

Last few weeks I've seen more and more posts on forums and on reddit of people complaining about this same issue. However, when I asked product support to open a ticket, the team just closed it immediately because "we went through basic GPS troubleshooting and there was nothing more they could do but exchange the device". I hope they can find what's wrong and fix it soon.

  • I'm having the same issue on 22.24. GPS stopped locking since a few weeks ago.

  • This issue went away by itself about a month ago. One day it just started working, not hard reset or anything, Instant GPS lock every time.

However, since last week it started happening again. I'm not able to get a fix, or a single GPS signal indicator. It appears as if it can't see any satellites, even though I'm at the same spot as always, and has a clear view of the sky.

Software version is the latest available to date (23.20), Ephimeris says current, and even a Factory Reset doesn't seem to help at all. I've seen several reports over the last few weeks on reddit of people having this same issue, and all of them seem to have a 1+ year old watch.

I don't know what's going on, but this really seems like a software issue. I've read that previous models used to have a diagnostics mode, which I think would've been very handy in this case. But yet again, I'm stuck with a GPS watch that doesn't GPS, and I have no recourse to fix it.

  • I started experiencing this issue on my 255 Music this week too. Tried all suggested workarounds/fixes and nothing has resolved it.

Host: 23.20, GPS: 13.00, Ephemeris: Current

I have contacted Garmin Support UK and will see what they say...

  • Resolved itself for me too. Everything still ok (as usual in 2.5 years). I agree that a diagnostic mode is required.

  • Started for me somewhere between may 28 and june 2. It takes 15 minutes to get a GPS lock now. I have tried factory reset but no difference at all.

  • I’ve been experiencing the same problem since May 29. GPS lock now takes 15–20 minutes and is less stable than before, with occasional signal losses that never occurred previously on the same routes. I’ve already tried a factory reset, but it didn’t help. The firmware version is 23.20 and the ephemeris data is up to date.

  • The battery also drains much faster. It was fully charged sunday night and now (wednesday) I'm at 49% after 6x15 minutes bike commuting. Normally it lasts a couple of weeks.
