Vo2 Max is not working properly in new device

Hi everyone,

I had a Vivoactive 4 that upgraded recently to a FR 255 Music. Everything is working great except for the Vo2 Max calculation. I have been using the watch during 2 weeks, had a few runs that according to the manual must calculate or update the Vo2 Max value. But the last value in the chart is from 4 weeks ago, when i was still using the Vivoactive 4.

The main problem with this is that others functions of the watch depends on this value. Like training status, LTHR calculations, race predictors, DSW, etc.

The runs are outdoor with GPS in a flat surface, HR is 70% or higher for more than 10 min continuous, HR is recorded using a Polar H9 Chest Strap BT, the weight value is updated. The device is also configured as the main training and wearable device. I removed the VA 4 from my Garmin account.

I don't know if there is something wrong with the watch. According to my max HR of 201 bpm, the 70% is about 141 bpm.

Current Vo2 Max at 18/10/2024, from almost 1 month ago

And these are some of the runs that i made during this week

The device is using the latest firmware available, 20.32. Any help is welcome

Thanks in advance,

Daniel

  • Hola Daniel cual es el problema? crees que lo está midiendo bajo el vo2max o alto?

  • Hi Lewis,

The problem is that is not measuring vo2 max for any of the activities. The last value is from a month ago, and is from my previous device.

The new device hasn't calculated any Vo2 Max but during this time I made some runs that meet the requirements to generate a new Vo2 Max calculation

Aside from that, the Vo2 Max value recorded is very high for my current fitness. I think that value of 52 is from the "All Day Heart Rate" Vo2 max calculation.

I am 31y male, and for the last 10 years never did any sort of cardiovascular activities. Others platforms like Runalyze estimate my Vo2 Max at 28 (I know they are not the same, but the value seems more realistic to me)

  • do a lactate threshold test, its in the options of the running activity, with a chest strap preferible in ant+, it will give you better values

  • i have the same experience since buyed the forerunner 255, until a buy a chest strap the vo2max started to change also the lactate threshold

  • I have a BT chest strap, i'll do the guided LT test during this weekend, and will come back with the results

    Thanks for the fast response

  • Seeing you have Runalyze , can you see the Vo2 "from Fit File" information, as that will show the number to two digits from the Garmin activity file.

  • Hi S.M.R,

Here is the information from Runalyze, the value of Vo2 from Fit File is frozen at  52,11.

The columns in the image are Runalyze Vo2, Garmin Vo2 From File, TRIMP Score, Temperature, from left to right.

All those runs are from this week, but that 52,11 value is the same in all the files since Sept 23

  • Ok , good luck with the Lactate test!

Basically they should change every activity as you say.

  • Hi ,

Garmin says about VO2max estimation - "Heart rate must be elevated to at least 70% of your maximum heart rate for at least 10 minutes continuously."

IMHO you have HRmax >201, hence you must steadily run more than 10 min long on HR > 140-150 bpm.

  • Hi global_local,

Yeah, exactly. At least the runs I made during this week were about 12-13 min continuous over 160 bpm.

I'm going to do a LHTR guided test tomorrow, if that doesn't work, my next step is try with a longer run
