new software version 20.29 fix battery drain of 20.26 version?

just updated the software to 20.29.

since installing 20.26, I've been having serious battery problems like many others. The battery drained twice as fast as it should.

anyone share their experience with the new software version?

Saw the post by Sierra and it's not clear if they tackled the problem on the new update

  • I recently had a 7.5 hour bicycle ride with GPS and navigation. I charged the watch the day before, and after the ride, the battery was dropped to 63 percent. Seems like it would last well over 20 hours. I do however doubt that I could finish an Ironman in 20 hours! :-)

  • Hi all,

    I've got the Forerunner 965
It didn't fix the battery drain here, at all. After 11 days !! and it is empty.
I installed a battery gauge app to see if something is happening. And it does....
For me, it is strange that at certain times the battery drains fast for a short period. You can see it in my screenshots.
I can not really see over what time this is happening, but it is every time at a certain time.
Hope that someone knows what this could be..

    Best regards,
    Manolito

  • Isn't that just the resolution of the signal? It drops from 100 to 93 in seven steps because there are no decimals.

  • hmmm interesting, thanks. The time between the drops are different.

  • I've been using this battery gauge for over a year on my FR255.  Like ovekvam said, it decrements in 100 steps, so that's normal.

I'd also say that some variation in the time between steps is normal. I don't think the Garmin battery percent estimation is all that accurate.  I''ve been using a custom watchface that lets me monitor this statistic during the day.

What often seems to happen is that one step will be "short" and look like anomalously high power draw, and then the next step will usually be "long" and seem like anomalously low power draw. It seems to all average out, so I suspect it is just measurement "noise" for when exactly the watch decided to say it dropped to the next threshold.

  • I think I'm getting normal power usage with 20.29, but I haven't done enough experiments to know if the weird problems occur with high draw after a charge.  I did see some odd draw with 20.26 but nothing as severe as others have described here.

I'm currently at about day 8.5 at 49% battery remaining.  If I recall correctly, I've done about 5 hours of GPS activity in this period.

I've disabled Garmin Share. I also keep bluetooth disabled, so my rates may be better than you're going to get otherwise.  I only enabled it to sync once for about 30 minutes about 1.5 days ago.

  • Hi, thanks for reply. I saw just know that this is the 255 forum. I have the 965 what could have, in ideal conditions, 23 days of battery in stead of 11 days....

  • I charged mine on 24 September and since then I have run (in total) 250 minutes with the most accurate (!) GPS setting. No other sports this time. I used my watch normally and now at 8pm on Wednesday night it is at 31% charge.
Unfortunately I never did an accurate test, but this for me roughly covers the previous operating times.

  • Battery drain of 13% in less than 24hrs... Literally bought the watch 1 month ago, I really hope Garmin is working on a fix.

  • normally it is around 6-8 percent a day. with hardly anything doing with it i.e. no activity, no pulseox, no playing with it, just letting it doing the job. so 13% is a bit more, maybe you play with it since it's new or have some other stuff on?
