[17.24][17.26] Lags, Freezes and missing data

Since the update to 17.24/17.26 my Forerunner 255 shows several bugs:

  • Starting the morning report today lead to extremely laggy behaviour. Every interaction/loading of a new page took minutes(!), with even getting stuck in the transition between the morning report pages (showing half of the previous page and have of the following page for a minute).
After i got to restart it, it was working again, but i noticed the watch drained 28% of battery within less than 24h, with only a 20min activity tracked.
  • Some days before the watch froze completely upon starting the morning report and restarted itself.
  • Twice in the last days it lost data from the past night: heartrate, body battery and stress data is missing in Garmin Connect from exactly midnight until the first wake phase. HRV however is there.

Am I the only one encountering those issues?

  • Indeed, 20% in half a day is unacceptable. Strangely enough, at the start of the day 7 am, I had been at 34% and by midnight only around 22% (no activities). So maybe a bit more than specced (I was bluetooth connected to my phone) but not so different that I would have thought normal before the update. But clearly something sometimes goes completely wrong in the software and starts sucking battery at an absurd rate.

  • It just happened to me in the middle of the day, i can see that it's taking too long time for buttons to do their actions and i can see that green LEDs under the watch are constantly blinking. You can see that battery icon is not centered and HR value is empty in photo.

  • Mine hard crashed again this morning and I lost about an hour of steps, hr, etc. so damn annoying!

  • little update - if the morning report is showing and I touch the light button the ui will freeze, including clock not updating right, for up to 30 mins. If I dont touch the light but click enter to see the report there are no obvious issues. Whilst UI is frozen battery usage is huge - about 5% in the 30 mins

  • I have tried pressing the light button on the morning screen and it does not freeze the watch, and everything is pretty smooth for me, at least this morning.

  • Another update for my side: I charged it back to 100% last night at midnight and this morning it was at 91% but it turns out that was with battery saver still on from yesterday so I achieved 9% battery usage while I was sleeping with the battery saver on

  • this morning it froze again. I turned bluetooth off on my phone (android) and the watch immediately became responsive again

  • tried to press light button today morning and it become frozen. I'll try same tomorrow

  • That's an interesting observation!

I wonder, do you have a lot of phone notifications enabled with your watch?  Could it be something like trying to get notifications with the new picture feature at the time the watch thinks you may be awake and exiting do-not-disturb mode?

I also use Android (Google Pixel 5a with Android 14, 2023-12-05 patch level) but I have all notifications disabled and also have bluetooth disabled both on the phone and the watch. I turned it on this morning for about 15 minutes to let it sync and resolve my "ephemeris: missing" status I noticed last night. It went normally with no appreciable change in battery level on the watch.

  • identical behaviour today: clicked light on morning report watch froze. turned off bluetooth on phone and watch immediately became responsive. I don't have any notifications enabled.

Looks like on watch wake up they are blocking the UI thread waiting for a bluetooth response which is poor. especially as the phone is likely to be asleep at that point.

I suspect keeping bluetooth off on the phone will be a workaround to reduce freezes and battery drain
