Poor GPS Tracking

Hello everyone,

I know this question has been asked quite a lot but haven't found a solution yet among other replies to similar questions.
As you can see below the tracking is quite crazy, and the wrongest part is actually right after the vibration with "GPS signal found" or something like that.

In this particular run I brought also my phone to check if that would have improved the accuracy, but clearly it didn't.
Latest updates are installed.

Also, I am a new user so I'm wondering whether maybe I'm just overlooking something obvious. The above run was a benchmark run from the running coach.

Thank you for your help!

  • What GPS settings are you using? The Forerunner 255 is known to have very good GPS tracking.

  • "All Systems" -> Better Accuracy

  • Wait, you shouldn't be seeing or getting vibrations from "GPS signal found" during your run, the signal should be found and established before you ever start your run. Are you waiting for GPS lock before starting your run?

  • Never had to wait with forerunner 255 to have a good accuracy.
This morning my first run with version 16.17, i 'lost' 1 km of distance on a 5km distance. (i run that part very often, so i really know when i'm missing disrtance)

The map show really weird datapoints. Been running trough houses where in reality i ran around the houses which is appox 200 meter.

Either GPS is horrible world wide atm or something wrong with latest update.

After 10k i changed the GPS settings from all systems (which was my setting since i got the watch) to  All + Multiband.

At that point the tracking seemed much better

  • If you run the same place over and over, the watch will get GPS lock rather quickly. If you do a GPS workout far away (on vacation or something), it will take a lot more time to understand where it is. Same thing again when you get home. It can also happen when the watch gets a new GPS software, like with this version. I also noticed it took extra time the first workout after installing 16.17. After that, it has been quick.

I never start a workout before I have all green from the GPS.

  • Got it, thank you everyone. I wasn't waiting to get the signal before the start of the run, will test that solution tomorrow.

  • I've same problem too, my activity results often seems have inaccurate position such as like curly route. Btw, i was keep it lock properly before my activity.

  • To me that solves the issue :) still not 100% perfect but almost, so quite happy of the result. Thank you!!

  • I'm facing similar problems, i do get GPS after some time, but it takes way longer than before the SW update and the position gets lost during the activity very often

The problems started with the update to 16.17 (GPS: 5.00) on my ForeRunner 255 music...
Please fix that issue asap - the watch is worthless more or less without working GPS (all data and calculation based on distance is corrupt) ...

, your situation sounds different if you're also having trouble locating GPS in the first place. May I have permission to reach you via email so I can gather more details?
