Concerning 8 hours of sleep... what about people who sleep less ?

Hello everybody,

I set my sleep window for 7 hours of sleep (from 10:00 p.m. to 5 a.m.) ...... but the Connect app. still says the "goal" is 8 hours. when I view my stats on it.

Moreover everyday it tells me I have not slept long enough (before advising me of other sleep issues it has detected) .... and gives me a lower body battery score (I would presume)

I have hardly ever slept 8 hours in my entire life .... even as a  youth..... and I am now nearly 66 years old.

My natural sleep time is 6 hours ..... and now I allow for 7 (because now I am older I wake up to pee and may not always get back to sleep immediately)

My question is ..... Will the watch eventually figure out that I DON'T need 8 hours of sleep ? ...... or is there some setting on the Connect app to change the sleep "goal"  separately to the "sleep window" ?

It is a known fact that there are people who require more (or less) sleep than others based on genetics (or whatever) ..... "forcing" myself to stay in bed for 8 hours when I don't need to do this is counterproductive and rather silly..... and I notice that doing so has a negative impact on my stamina and daily energy (regardless of what the Body Battery might be telling me).

Don't get me wrong.... I think Body Battery is a brilliant idea ..... but it would be nice if the designers had a "calibrate"  option.... I am hoping it's automatic...... and the watch is intelligent enough to eventually figure out that I am in the peak of health for my age (based on my daily activities and the information it constantly measures) and then it could stop telling me "shorter than ideal" and give me a better "body battery" score..... don't you think ?

Am I expecting too much ? Is there another way to set a lower number for the sleep "goal" ?

  • I rarely sleep more than 7 hours, and my watch will typically tell me that it was shorter than ideal, but that I rested well. I sometimes get 99 percent body battery after around 6.5 hours of sleep, if I had enough deep sleep and REM sleep.

  • I don't sleep 8 hours either.
It's my desire, my goal, however it doesn't happen. Mainly during week days.
I do also wake up in the middle of the night to pee (I'm 52), but fortunately I go back to sleep immediately.
Anyway, in the next morning I can see on the sleep graphic all registered.
I have a very light sleep. Any noise wakes me up, so this gives me low score and low body battery charging.
I'm experimenting in the last two weeks sleeping with those foam ear plugs and I'm having better night sleeps.
Even body battery has been improving.
Body battery I don't see it as a main indicator about my "real body battery".
It gives me an idea how my body might be.
I still use my physical perception.

But one thing is right, we really need at least 8 hour-sleep per night.
When I get close to 8 hours, I wake up with more strength.
More than 8 hours, I wake up feeling heavy and sored.

    Good luck and good trainings.

  • Thanks for your answer...it's encouraging

  • I disagree that "we really need at least 8 hour sleep per night" .... some people need that  but  not true for everybody .....  if I sleep more than 7 hours, I wake up feeling more tired and lethargic than when I went to bed clearly for me it is too much sleep and weakens my body..... from a child I have been sleeping 6 hours totally naturally.

Now I am 65 and wake up in the night more often to pee ..... I allow for that, but the actual sleep time is still  between 6 and 7 hours

My best sleep score so far is 79 ... with a total sleep of 6h 38m

    1h 25m in deep sleep

    4h 20m in light sleep

    53m in REM sleep

and a stress level of 11

Best Wishes with your goals ..... and thanks for your post and insights
