Gps issues

I bought the 255 music in december and have issues since then.

First was an erratic gps, fixed with the update but then the screen fonts were so little i could tell anything. Fixed with the update and here we are with another issue.

It's about 1 week that i when i select run i'm waiting for the gps red band to fill up but it never moves. Tried to turn off the watch but nothing changes.

I had to run for a fixed time so nevermind the pace i pressed start, and the pace showed up. First km was a little off (too short) the other seemed fine but i can't tell.

But in the end, after 1h50 run i uploaded the activity and it shows no map, seem like the gps has always been off, so i don't know where that pace was coming from.

did someone experienced the same issue?

thanks

  • Mine takes a minute or so to get a lock when I am outside and hold my wrist so the watch is face-up to the sky. It's less sensitive than my phone which can easily get a lock indoors (even in airplane mode and OSMAnd+, so I don't think it is a network-assistance difference). Like any GPS receiver, I believe it does have some GPS state that makes it lock faster when it is up to date. It can get it from being paired to the phone with Garmin Connect or otherwise has to slowly receive it from the satellites.

Also, which satellite mode do you have set? I have used "all systems" and the "automatic" mode that I think may have just appeared in the recent 14.x firmware.

I think without GPS it is estimating distance based on the step count from the accelerometer.

  • It used to lock to the gps in seconds, not even 30, and suddenly stopped now.

All options are set to default and i'm outside with clear sky above.

    It's quite frustrating

  • Mine might be more like 15-30 seconds.  I can be impatient so it might just feel like up to a minute!  But I do notice a longer delay if I didn't get a lock recently nor sync with the phone.

Edit: I forgot to add, I've only had mine a few weeks. It works for me on 14.20 but I didn't go through the same upgrades that you probably did. I wonder if it would be worth trying to do some various levels of reset, potentially all the way to factory reset?  That might help see if the hardware is the problem or just the software state?

  • I'll probably do, this would be the second time i have to do it, not right for something that doesn't come cheap.

    Thanks

    Garmin support hello! any suggestion?????

  • If the watch does not have any GPS signal, it estimates the pace like indoors, using your arm movements.

  • I didn't know, is it accurate or completely off?

  • The estimated pace can be okay if you have have several GPS activities on foot to let the watch calibrate how your arm movements correspond to your actual pace.

  • I get the same - takes 30 seconds now. Used to be like 5 seconds. Settings haven't been changed.

  • You may want to check the status of your EPO file. If it's outdated, it might take the watch longer to get a fix.

  • That would seem like a possible cause. Does the EPO file not get updated whenever I sync with Garmin Connect Mobile?
