Erratic Wrist based Heart rate : BUG + Root cause

Hi,

already raised in other Posts (see list at the end)
and tried all of this:
The Heart Rate Sensor on My Garmin Watch Is Not Accurate

Problem is not accuracy, the heart rate is sometimes completely wrong.

I went back into all activities (Garmin connect shows the watch + firmware used in each activity) and came to this conclusion:

firmware 10.x   11.x     :      ok      (not as accurate as chest wrap but ok)

firmware 12.x + later   :      not ok   (unexplainable values going too low / too high)

it's not the temperature (cold) ; it's not the cadence lock ; it's not the position/tightening  : ruled that out and did many tests.

If you can confirm your findings (look in history + which firmware) then we can raise this as a firmware bug to be solved

  • All,

We have a fix for this bug but are still conducting tests. I'm very sorry for the frustration, but appreciate your patience as we get closer to releasing the fix.

I will update this thread when it is available, and do not have a timeline at the moment.

  • Is there any news? Running 18.12 on music version and facing strange behavior. Mi VO2max typicalli on low side, jumped to 239 and now on a level of a professional athlete.

The traing status i a bit erratic, as well as the recovery time.

Active calories are sometimes incresing fast even when I'woking on my desk.

  • A VO2Max of more than 200 is more than twice as high as the best athletes out there.

  • "Alaskan huskies running in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race had V̇O2 max values as high as 240 mL/(kg·min). Estimated V̇O2 max for pronghorn antelopes was as high as 300 mL/(kg·min)."
    You are welcome! Upside down
  • I see Slight smile. Always lowed both the huskies and the antilopes  Yum

Besides, unfortunately it didn't happen while running in the savannah. but just walking, and the watch automatically recognized the movement.

So maybe is the Move IQ that causes issues.

  • As others stated HR randomly jumps up aprox 20 bpm (from 156 to 176 in 4sec) and keeps the extra 20bpm added until i slow down and it falls back. I have max heartrate at 183, last session my max HR was 205 and max HR auto adjsuted 192 Disappointed Please fix it. Thanks

  • My hr monitor is terrible. Sometimes drops a bunch, sometimes runs crazy high. I can be relaxing and it will say 110. Running everything from a 7.45-11.00 is a tempo. Today was 8.40 and vo2 max, but I could easily talk and was happy chilling.

I keep getting huge gaps in measuring. Showing both on the watch and the app.

A few weeks ago it wasn't measuring floors accurately at all. It wasn't even vaguely close. I called them about it and they didn't care at all. Suggested I try a different hard reset, but really not a big issue so live with it. Yet I paid for something that is s advertised as measuring this, so it should be seen as an issue.

The last few weeks my resting hr, HRV and body battery are all kinds of wrong. I can wake from the most relaxing long sleep, natural wake up because I aren't tired anymore. My watch thinks my hr is mid 50's (high for me) HRV 70 (very low for me) and my body battery is 30 because of my terrible sleep. Itys so frustrating to have half the metrics just not working and it isn't worth calling again as they don't care

Will probably just do Polar or similar next time. Shame as we all have garmins and have for years

  • I'm sorry to hear you're having multiple disruptions. If you're seeing gaps in your data, you may be experiencing freezing on your device in general. We have a fix for this coming soon. Since you're have other concerns, may I have permission to reach you via email?

  • The same thing has started happening to me with my new Forerunner 255s. Its been absolutely fine for the last two months but since Tuesday the HR has been all over the show, its shows a very low hr while running and then gets stuck and then all of a sudden jumps to maximum heart rate. The pace gets stuck and doesnt change even when Im doing strides during a run. Hopefully your fix will roll out to all devices?
