Music stops playing during an activity - Forerunner 255 music edition

Hi,

I have a forerunner 255 music edition and found that playing music via the watch is really bad and basically useless.

I have latest SW on the Garmin watch 12.27 and use Beats Fit pro earbuds. I wear my watch on my left arm.

All works fine when I play music via my iphone IOS 16.1 but when I leave my phone at home and want to play music via the watch it stops all the time when I'm doing an activity.

I tried all the usual things like removing the earbuds connection from the watch and setup like new a few times, reboot the watch. The music plays fine as long as I don't do any activity with the watch. In parallel I use the HRM pro plus HR monitor. Running with or without does not make any differences.

I also tried to disable all notifications during an activity but no difference. The problem starts with a short stuttering of the music and then after a while (maybe 2 minutes) the music stops completely and connection to the earbuds is lost. They don't reconnect automatically which is a pain.

Any ideas mr. Garmin since I see that this is a common issue.

  • Have you tried with another bluetooth device (maybe a speaker)? I haven't had the watch for a long time, so I haven't used it much on its own yet (without a phone connection), but I did a test tonight and during a 1-hour elliptical training session there were no problems.

  • I believe I tried it. I sat at my desk playing music from my watch  and using the bluetooth Beats fit pro. and started an activity. Music did not stop.

I will try that again. Thanks for suggestion.

PS. I also tried with an outdoor activity (running) with another bluetooth headset. Same issues as in my first message. It seems that the watch does not like you to move while playing music (from the watch)

  • There may be some kind of incompatibility problem. You write that you had no problems with a Beats fit pro indoors. Have you tried running with these earphones? Or what was it that you couldn't run with?
I have a Liberty 3 Pro. I will test it outside this week, but I don't think that moving the clock (as you write) is the problem.

  • As I'm typing this message I have connected my watch to the beats fit pro and started a running "activity" . after that I started playing music. (regular MP3 fies)
So far so good and no hiccups or stopping of the music or losing connection to the headphones.

Of course I'm not moving which I think is the issue.

  • Update.
Music stopped playing after 2 songs. When I checked my watch it said that GPS signal had connected. Maybe related to that?
I had to connect to the earbuds again and music is playing again. Let;s see how long it will play now

I'm sitting at my desk while trying this. but with an activity started.

  • Music stops and looses connection to the earbuds all the time even while not moving.

Useless. I think I will contact Gamrin for help to get it sorted.

  • I think there's something wrong with your watch. You might also try creating a new activity from walking without GPS. Then see what happens when you start that activity. It might be worth checking whether the problem is related to the GPS.

  • Yes, maybe. Sitting at my desk and listening to music (from the watch) it just stops every 2-3 minutes. Then I restart the music by pressing play on the watch and then watch connects to the earbuds again and it plays fine again for couple of minutes. This time without any activity.

  • And you do this with the Beats Fit pro? Because you wrote at the beginning that it's fine under these conditions.
Be sure to test with several bluetooth devices, because if you don't, support may just tell you to change the earphones because it's the wrong one. If it does the same with different sound sources (headphones, earphones, speakers), they really can't say anything about that.

  • Tested. And it's not OK for me either.
I didn't feel like running in the evening, but I had to go to a friend's house. So I walked 2.55 km there, and 2.8 km back.
On the way there I started the music in the staircase (no GPS signal here). In front of the house I selected the walk (the music was still playing), about as soon as the watch found the satellite link (I was standing in one place) the music stopped. The only way I could get it to play again was to press "sensors & accessories" in the menu and then did a disconnect and a reconnect. It was working for about 14 minutes (with activity going on) and then stopped again. Disconnect, reconnect (I did not stop the activity) and it was fine again.
On the way back: connected to the earphone, music starts, start workout, satellite connection OK. 2 minutes of listening, music stopped again. After disconnecting and reconnecting, it held all the way home.
What's weird is that if the music gets stuck, it doesn't disconnect for me because I can start and stop the music from the earpiece, but the music doesn't play.
