Forerunner 255 wrong open water readings

Hi all. I have bought new garmin forerunner 255 and open water activity recording is pretty disapointing. I previously owned fenix 3 and forerunner 735xt and my pace during open water activity is between 1:50 and 2:10 per 100m. With 255 is around 2:45 and 3:20. I also swam with both fenix 3 and 255 on my wrist and 255 was pretty off. I used all possible satelite configurations the watch has but the erroneous readings persist. I also updated to the last software version through garmin connect (11.12) and nothing has changed. I'm pretty frustrated because I cant find whats wrong. I should add that I also used the watch for a 15k run along with my fenix 3 and the activity was recorded perfectly and a lot better than my fenix. Is anybody facing same problems?

  • I tried all settings and it is the same.

It is not GPS related, rather just software.

There is usually no gps reception under water, so it just gets some signals when the hand is out.

255 draws the swimming track quite ok, but somehow it records more than double that distance.

And it is pure swimm8ng, movement, no stops.

  • I've enabled the multiband mode and I have swum freestyle (so with the hand outside of the water often) and the track got better. The distance measured while staying still went down considerably (although it could also be due to me trying to keep my hand outside of the water more).

Talking about this thread's problem though, I will try to measure the distance and see if it's right or wrong.

  • would be great if developers would take this seriously.

  • Yes it would, but they do not pay attention to this problem although it is present on latest lines of watches. They chose to ignore it.

  • I just called Garmin about this problem with my Garmin 255 Music.

For some open water swims it records twice the distance - and if I stop (with my watch out of the water) I can see the meters going up 1 m per second.

I mentioned that there were similar complaints on the forum and they said that there are currently no open tickets about this issue. If people of this thread are still having the issue please call Garmin support and open a ticket! If you've solved it then please share how. Note that my software and firmware are up to date.

    Thanks!

    • Which version of the firmware do you have? I upgraded to 255 from 935 last month as the 935 open water swimming had gone to *** (I think after a firmware update). 255 has exactly the same issues - solidly it’s under reading distance by 15+ meters per 100m (1:30/100 becomes 1:45-2:00/100). I have the latest firmware 15.19….
