(Known Issue) GPS Recorded Track Shifted by FAR with Respect to the Map

I had a weird issue today. It seems that Garmin put my recorded activity track over 300m to the left with respect to where I in fact actually ran. This is the screenshot I got from this activity. It never happened before. Of course, the GPS signal was acquired prior to starting the activity. Is there a way to solve it?

  • My Vivoactive 4S started with around 150m offset eastwards on an outdoor activity today, and recovered to correct position from around 40 minutes onwards. Seems like the CPE information from Garmin is still incorrect.

  • Same issue on 245 Music. Impacted since last software update (June 28, version 10.40).

  • Update: restarted my watch and left it overnight and it seems to be tracking accurately again this morning. Not sure if it was the restart of if they fixed something but fingers crossed it stays working!

  • Also experienced on FR245 (non music) running 10.40, but this is not linked to the update (I've already ran with this version without trouble).

Although at some point it properly locked its position (after ~20 minutes).

Such issue already occured (also on other watches) a few years back on a 1st of january.

Workaround if I remember well was to keep the watch with sport widget (GPS-enabled, such as running) laying outside for like 20 minutes before starting the activity (so that GPS properly locked).

  • My bicycle ride this afternoon was back on track right from the start.

  • My Apple Watch tracked the same runs perfectly, that my garmin couldn't. I also have not seen any mention of it from users of other brands (I also have a Polar watch and also keep an eye on that side too).

  • Today the issue seems to be fixed.

  • Seems like the issue is back, but worse than before. Had a run today (shown below) and it was uploaded with many issues related to the GPS. In reality the start and finish locations are the same, also the uploaded tracking points don't follow any roads at all. This time it was just shifted in its entirely one way or another, seems a bit more random. Also the splits were messed up. A few splits were shown as less than half a km instead of the usual 1.0 km lap distance per split.

Anyone else have this issue come back again after a week or so of it being resolved?

  • I just checked the map of the walk I have just done after seeing your post and yes the issue is back for me.

  • I bought the Forerunner 245 Music to replace my TomTom Spark II watch. The Forerunner has many more features which I really like and better bluetooth connection to my ear buds so I cannot complain. However, the TomTom has much better GPS accuracy then the Forerunner. For me it does not matter too much because I digitize my routes in Google Earth in order to get accurate route length. Today I had a weird situation where the lap duration all of a sudden was about 2 minutes longer than the previous laps. During the rest of my walk (power walk) I noticed a few other laps times that we also off. When I got home I downloaded the track to Google Earth and to my surprise I saw that the track at some point really started to drift away. It got up to 400m away to the actual path and stayed that way for the last 8K of my walk. In addition, this part of my walk was in a wide open area (road next to a canal) with no buildings or trees.

    Bottom line for me:

    • Garmin Forerunner 245 Music GPS is poor
    • Don't really care about poor GPS as I know my route length and I like the other features
    • Will be using this to track some hikes this summer, so will probably also use my old TomTom Spark to make sure I can a more accurate track recorded.
