health and training statistics for older people

I notice that the training statistics on a fenix 6 are being evaluated for given age brackets. The 'oldest' age group seems to be 70 - 79. I am over 80, reasonably fit, and wonder what the garmin statistics data mean for me? In particular, the daily running training plans seem to be all made up for much younger people. Is there any source for typical training data for people with age > 80 within the Garmin site (or elsewhere)?

  • Data for any age group is based on research so naturally it’s going to be very limited for octogenarians. I’ve done a quick trawl through some academic journals and have found very limited information. The best you can probably do is make to compare yourself with the younger age groups. If you’re fit and active you’ll likely be much better - makes you feel great too. As someone who’s approaching 70 I get a kick out of seeing my data is better than people 20 or 30 years younger.

As for training plans, your best bet would be the internet.

  • Many thanks. Do you have any good internet source with training plans for older people? Also I would be interested in seeing statistics for values such as VO2max for older people. All I have found are reports on some superfit octogenerians, but all the tables usually end around 70 years old.
