HRM PRO having issues in cold weather?

I have been working out with the HRM pro (yellow) for a while now.  Batteries are good and strap is still in really good shape, its only 5 months used.  I've been using Garmin's HRM straps for many years now, from swim, tri, pro, and standard HRM units.  I've never had an issue with cold weather operation until this latest HRM pro strap.  This is my second pro strap as my first got worn down.  The HRM works fine indoors or with warmer weather.  It is now around freezing in the early morning for my runs and the HR data is erratic and very high.  To avoid static I always put on lotion so my shirt isn't staticy with dry weather and I make sure to wet the leads before starting workout.  The HR data is a good 30-40 beats high.  For example, this morning on an easy run my HR was about 125, but HR strap was readying in the 150's.  Sometimes, once I begin sweating, the HR will kick back to normal and the HR data will immediately drop and settle in, but sometimes it doesn't.  Today was an easy run and never really got a good sweat going.  I had to stop my run and switch to watch HR sensor for the rest of the run.

Curious if anyone else is having this issue?

  • My HRM Pro +  started doing something similar recently.  It will always start my activity at 140 bpm+ and then slowly settle down to a more accurate reading.  I wet the sensors just as I would with any previous HRM strap so I don't think it's a connectivity issue.

It seems to have started with the 8.8 update but that also coincided with the temperature dropping.

    It is a bit frustrating.

  • Yup, your chart is right on. HR increases up relatively quickly then eventually settles down. For others that have commented about wetting the leads are not quite understanding the issue. It’s not a connectivity issue. The HR monitor works fine in warmer temps but as soon as you step outside when it’s cold it acts up. I’ve been running with my older HRM TRI for a couple of months now and I have had zero issues. Including runs in the teens. The other morning it was 15 degrees and had I had no problems with HRM TRI.

  • here is my example. This was an easy run. Notice the same spike in the beginning.

  • Yeah still same issue I have to switch to wrist based HR. You can see the spike… then you can see after I disconnect the hrm pro.

  • The HR monitor works fine in warmer temps but as soon as you step outside when it’s cold it acts up.

It isn't just in the cold though. Up here in New Zealand it is not cold and I can still get that ramp at the beginning before it settles down. I do agree it is unlikely to be simply a connectivity issue but more likely something to do with the strap in general. The advantage of thoroughly soaking the leads is that you virtually remove any possibility that it is a connectivity issue.
