HRM PRO having issues in cold weather?

I have been working out with the HRM pro (yellow) for a while now.  Batteries are good and strap is still in really good shape, its only 5 months used.  I've been using Garmin's HRM straps for many years now, from swim, tri, pro, and standard HRM units.  I've never had an issue with cold weather operation until this latest HRM pro strap.  This is my second pro strap as my first got worn down.  The HRM works fine indoors or with warmer weather.  It is now around freezing in the early morning for my runs and the HR data is erratic and very high.  To avoid static I always put on lotion so my shirt isn't staticy with dry weather and I make sure to wet the leads before starting workout.  The HR data is a good 30-40 beats high.  For example, this morning on an easy run my HR was about 125, but HR strap was readying in the 150's.  Sometimes, once I begin sweating, the HR will kick back to normal and the HR data will immediately drop and settle in, but sometimes it doesn't.  Today was an easy run and never really got a good sweat going.  I had to stop my run and switch to watch HR sensor for the rest of the run.

Curious if anyone else is having this issue?

  • Mine did this yesterday I thought perhaps the fr955 was under counting as the watch was showing much lower but I could feel my heart pounding. It was cold wet and windy too.

  •  Sometimes, once I begin sweating,

Do you wet your strap before starting? It is good practice to thoroughly wet the strap in warm water (unless you like a cold strap) before an activity. Often times, just moistening the pads is not enough.

  • Yes, I wet the leads. No point in wetting the entire strap. Been using my HRM TRI with no problems. I think the strap is bad

  • Same issue here I even put electrode gel on the contacts like was suggested.  Heart is still 20 to 30 beats high… makes it pretty much useless in the fall thru Spring in the Northeast.

  • I wonder if the Bluetooth is interfering with the transmission Even though it’s still connected to watch with ant+. I’ve been using my HRM TRI with no issues.

  • I have same problem last few days when outside temperature is around 0 degrees C. My heartrate goes to 150 bpm (or higher when I change my pace to something faster) even when I am running very slow and normaly I wil have around 120-130 bpm. Sometimes I put water to electrodes sometimes not, it doesn't look like it change something. Usually after some time the read BPM goes down to correct numbers. For inside training it is not happenning. Last time I don't have a phone with me, so there should be no interfering device. I have HRM Pro with Garmin 6X watch.

  • To give another perspective, I've been running with HRM Dual (very similar to Pro) for two years in cold conditions during the winter (I live in Finland, so anything from -15C to 0C). I wet the whole strap properly with warm water (under tap) before heading out, and I've never had problems with incorrect HR. My shirts have been mainly merino wool ones, that might reduce static electricity.

  • Wetting the strap is a sound idea, but some straps just let the water bead up and it doesn't really soak in. A tip I saw on YouTube was to actually wet your chest. Then you absolutely guarantee damp skin. By all means wet the strap too, but, if you still have problems, try wetting the skin.
