HRM-PRO Autocalibration

I updated the HRM and there is an option for distances and tempos. I'm happy to change  my old Food sensor. But.

I want to switch the distance and pace to the "always" option, but the "autocalibration" option turns off

How to set the distance and pace manually

In food under was the rate, and what to do in HRM-PRO?

I do not understand this Garmin.

  • The website says this:

Does the HRM-Pro/Pro Plus Provide Distance During a Timed Activity?

No, the HRM-Pro and HRM-Pro Plus are not able to provide distance information during a timed activity. Both the HRM-Pro and HRM-Pro Plus provide running dynamics, but do not replace a foot pod for providing distance from an external sensor.

Makes the issue even more confusing.

  • The HRM’s running pace and distance feature was designed to give better accuracy than what is available from the wrist, primarily for indoor running or outdoors in locations that are challenging for GPS.  The feature will be most accurate if you autocalibrate with about 2 hours of run data first, in the presence of good GPS.  To do this:

    1. Make sure the “Use for Pace” setting is set to “Indoor” or “Off”.
    2. Accumulate about 2 hours of running across your typical pace ranges.  This does not need to be done all in one session.
    3. To use the HRM outdoors, switch the “Use for Pace” setting to “Always”.

Note that the manual treadmill calibration is intended to account differences in running form that some individuals exhibit when running on a treadmill compared to running over ground.  This is not required outdoors.

  • Well, that's updated in the last 12 hours then!

  • What are you looking for exactly? If you want precise distances for sprints or short intervals then the only realistic way to get that is with track workouts. Foot pods and other sensors like the Garmin HRM-Pro will never be exact, there will always be few meters plus or minus, but for most real world distance running training it's close enough. The DC Rainmaker review contains several real world accuracy tests showing how close you're likely to get.

  • Just out of curiosity if the strap was set to "always" would it continue to record distance and pace if your watch was to go flat for example? I'm assuming the activity would normally default to the one from the watch when uploading if it's set to always?

  • These are exactly the kind of answers I expected.
    Thanks a lot.
Didn't you think to make something similar to foodpod? That there is an option to calibrate auto and fine tune manually.
Food pod after all is not perfect either, but if hrm pro works similarly technically, it would be a nice option, in the next update.
My fodpod is wrong 5-10 m for me is the ideal distance.

  • For me footpod was always giving more accurate pace comparing to wrist.

But I cannot understand why HRM-Pro cannot autocalibrate when pace configured to "Always" as any other footpod. Garmin or Stryd or whatever. it actually autocalibrates continuously.

I mean you run differently during winter and summer depending on surface. Or you progress in trainings and you start running more effectively. Or you just recovering from injury. All the run patterns will be different. Autocalibration is something always needed.

Shall I be switching it off and then on again to make it recalibrate? How shall I know when I need it?

Weird descision. You need to change that in next fw versions
