How long does the battery in your Garmin HRM Run chest transmitter last?

Hi,

I bought a Garmin 735XT and the Garmin HRM Run chest transmitter about 6 months ago. I'm only getting about 30 hours use at the very most from the chest transmitter battery before having to replace it with a new one. Is this normal? I see that garmin states over 300 hours use from a new battery. I'm not getting a fraction of this for some reason. The transmitter is well looked after and always wiped and dried thoroughly after every use. Is this likely to be a faulty unit? Is it worth asking Garmin for a replacement?

  • There are huge differences between battery brands. Some will last significantly longer than others. With good batteries I get about a year on my hrm run around 1500km in a year. I wear it on most runs.

  • Thanks Rick,

I just assumed all batteries were created equal. They had a long expiry date. The voltage was checked prior to use and that seemed fine. However, they were cheap ones. Just a few pounds for about 20 or so batteries. I did wonder if the make of battery made a difference as the original battery that came with the HRM Run gave me a much more respectable 200 or so hours of use before needing replacement. I'll buy a single battery of a known make from a reputable dealer and see if that makes a difference. I guess a Duracell or Panasonic is a good a brand as any. Thanks for your help.

  • Just bought a couple of Duracell branded batteries. It'll be interesting to see how many hours use I get from those.

  • How are you getting on with the battery life? I have changed mine twice in a year and it's gone again. Getting about 4 months use per battery. Previous monitor battery lasted years.

  • I used Dollarama CR2032s and they seem to last two or three months. No warning either! Typical Garmin.

  • Why is this a Garmin issue?

The wrist units give a warning at low battery. And if you buy cheap batteries then you get what you pay for.

I use IKEA ones sometimes and they last a few months, or the more expensive duracell ones last over a year.

  • "No warning either! Typical Garmin."...Three of four Garmin devices I've owned do. I don't know why/. Ask them.

" you get what you pay for."...In no way did I indicate otherwise.

"The wrist units give a warning at low battery." ...I'm referring to a HR strap, and they've never done that. It would be helpful!

  • I ended up getting my chest transmitter replaced by Garmin.

I'm not convinced it was the brand of battery that was an issue as I also tried Duracell and Panasonic, but the problem continued.

I  now use a different chest transmitter. Garmin HRM Tri and battery life is a lot better. Not 300 hours, but probably a few months which I'm perfectly happy with.

Garmin recommends washing the transmitter after so many uses. I wonder if that caused the battery issue, as the internals were always damp after washing, despite making sure the rubber seal was in place properly and the screws tightened securely.

  • Yes, I have returned something to Garmin in the past. I agree it's possible that the battery isn't the problem. It just seems like a very fussy piece of instrumentation, and not well designed to mitigate that.

Mine has now stopped working, and the Garmin site has no way to troubleshoot or repair it. I really don't like dealing with them and their products anymore. I'e had too many bad experiences with faulty things and bad customer service.

  • Sorry to hear that you have had bad experiences with them. It was the only time I've had to contact Garmin and I was happy with the service on this occasion. There were no replacement chest transmitters available anywhere due to a shortage. I wasn't very happy about not knowing when a replacement (weeks) would be sent out to replace my faulty unit, as I use it daily. With all due respect to Garmin, they rectified the situation by offering me the more expensive HRM Tri to replace my HRM Run transmitter, which I thought was good service and a decent gesture/solution. The replacement unit was sent and received quickly as promised.
