Very high kilometers in first second of run

I quite often have an issue where the first second of a run will have a very high number of kilometers.

I know the first instinct will be to blame my phone's GPS, but I know that's not the case because I use Strava at the same time and it's using the same phone GPS. I wait for Strava to get a GPS fix, start that, then start my Garmin.

The map is correct.

It's a Vivosmart 5.

  • Sorry to hear about this! We will want to get you added to an open report regarding this. Would you please provide the following:

    • Upload the Garmin Folder by following the steps in the 2nd drop down here: Sending a Garmin Folder From a Device to Product Support
    • Does this occur on all activities or just this once?
    • Please provide dates of 2-3 activities that this has occurred on?
    • Do we have permission to access your Connect account?
    • Do we have permission to email you?
    • What country are you based in?
  • I have uploaded the folder.
This occurs for some activities, not all - maybe about 1 in 3.
Here are some dates of activities - running:
    31-1-24
    4-2-24
    7-3-24
    10-3-24
After the run I manually edited the distance, but you can still see the original times for the laps.
You have permission to access my account.
You have permission to email me.
    I'm based in the Netherlands.
  • It's still happening. Here's today's run

  • Thanks, I've reached out to you via email.

  • I'm having the same issue, can you add me to the report as well. I can provide detailed info.

  • I have had this happen several times, including today. I have taken a snapshot of the device storage and can provide any particular files or the entire contents on request.

  • For those that are curious, support suggested a full reset of the watch and the app. This seems to have worked for me.

    1. Open Garmin Connect and delete your Garmin device : support.garmin.com/.../

    2. Then delete Garmin Connect from your phone.

    3. Go to bluetooth settings on your phone.

    4. Remove the bluetooth connection from your Garmin device. !important step!

    5. Turn off your mobile phone and leave your phone off for at least 1 minute.

    6. Reset your device to factory settings, see steps below:

Note! This will delete all the data you have entered and your activity history.

Select delete data and restore settings

    7. Download the Garmin Connect app again.

    8. Enable bluetooth on both devices.

    9. Go to the Garmin Connect app.

    10. Make the bluetooth pairing again from the Garmin Connect app.

  • And the next run after this it's broken again :(

  • I am not surprised. This very much looks like a bug in their software. Even if the wrong reading is coming from the phone, their software should filter out clearly impossible values.

  • The day after my previous post I had an activity show zero distance. In both cases the actual GPS track looks perfectly fine and I could separately calculate the correct distance (gpsbabel+gpxinfo) and fill it in manually.

I've since tried the reset, but it's a nuisance redoing all my settings.
