Vivoactive 4 battery drain after update to 5.80

The green sensor(HR sensor i think)  glows continuously. The battery lasts only two to three days if there is no activity like running or walking...

I believe this is a minor bug in the code that can be corrected quickly. Garmin developers please check this and fix it :)

  • I can confirm that when I used default watch face the power consumption was as before update to 5.80 (usually more than 5 days), but with third party watch face.

I am using backlight when is less light, during night and sleep etc and my experience is with default watch face more than 5 days with third part watch face approx two days. I was testing it more than 10 days.

  • My current observations:

On most days the battery drain is around 30%/day. Regardless which warchface is selected. Not further activity, only heart rate measurement and a few notifications.

But during some nights the battery is emptied in a few hours amd the watch is shut down in the morning (started from 50% 6 hours before).

Last night i could see that the green heart rate light was on with full power, much more brightness than normal - and a few hours later the battery was empty.

  • I get the same issues, I dont feel Garmin support have put these battery issues as a priority.  They exchanged my new Garmin with a refurbished one with the same issue..

  • Is Garmin's plans to solve the problem with the discharge of the battery? My Vivoactive 4 only lasts 2.5 days with SO2 at night and fulltime heart rate monitoring. I really want to go back to FW 5.00, which had no problems with the battery. But on next day I see this bad buggy ugly firmware again. I'm angry. This is my first and last Garmin device.

  • hey Yan, I'm testing BETA 6.02 and although I didn't have issues with the battery like you, I can say that although the new firmware having some nasty bugs it still performs way better when it comes to battery life, at least comparing to any other firmware I was using. So maybe with the next update the problems described in this thread will be solved.

  • do you have any news about this issue and possibility of fix in the nearest FW update?

Some people in this thread mentioned that none note in release note was there.

Can we expect the fix of this issue in the near feature?

I want use my favorite 3rd party watch face not default from Garmin :-)

    Thanks for your response.

  • NOT a permanent solution - but have you tried turning off the backlight completely? Not just setting at 0%, actually disable it.

This fixed the drain issue for me - I am using the SHN TxD face.

It’s definitely a Garmin issue relating to backlight, gesture and “high power mode”.

  • No I have still setup 0% and when I am going to the bed then I change it on 10% and during day switch it back to 0.

What I changed was the watch face to default from Garmin and battery life came back as before update 5.80. When I changed it back on 3rd party watch face then battery life is seriously sorted.

I think it should be mix of issues with watch face and backlight.

But as I mentioned with default watch face I have none issue with battery also with using backlight.

  • Test turning off the backlight completely and using the third party face for a few days. I’m interested if the drain stops completely. At least then it won’t just be me talking about it!

  • I've turned off the backlight via wrist-move - only a minor change.

backlight with wrist move: from 48% to 41% in three hours (no activities and other usage during that time, only OHR). -> 2,3%/h

Backlight only on touch: from 41% to 33% in four hours -> 2%/h

This was measured with a stock watch face.

I am not shure if i should do an additional test with the backlight complete off (even when screen is touched) - does this make a difference on your watch?
