Turn-by-Turn Navigation missing - Bug or simply not available?

Hello everyone,

The Venu 4 product page advertises the following:

COURSES WITH TURN-BY-TURN DIRECTIONS

Create or find existing courses in the Garmin Connect smart-device app, or sync from your favorite third-party platforms and get turn-by-turn directions.

But when I create a route and let it navigate me, I don't get any turn-by-turn directions. Only the distance to the destination is shown at the bottom of the display.

Test videos on YouTube have also criticized the lack of turn-by-turn directions, even though they should be available according to the advertising.

Is this false advertising or a bug in the watch?

Do other owners have the same problem?

Many thanks and best regards,
Chris

  • It’s on the website, since the released day, as big as the watch, remarkable, and one of the big updates of this watch my friend.

  • it's a shitshow of epic proportions....

  • So, I couldn't resist and decided to test the navigation on my wife's Venu 4 watch. I created a route in the maps.com application, exported the GPX file, opened it in Garmin Connect, and sent it to the watch. And lo and behold, the navigation worked great, including the turn notifications, etc... I was using my own Venu X1 alongside it, and both watches gave equally good warnings/alerts.

I don't think there is anything more to discuss here; in my opinion, it works perfectly. Your issue is probably with your GPX files, which likely do not contain the turn-by-turn data. I now have a different problem with the navigation, but I will start a separate thread for that since it does not concern this topic.

  • Well then why is Garmin now saying the watch doesn't offer this function after all Laughing See no evil

I don't know why mine doesn't work then because my GPX files do contain turn by turn data and I was perfectly capable of creating courses with turn by turn directions on my previous Garmin...

  • It works great for my wife. I noticed no difference compared to the full-featured navigation running simultaneously on the Venu X1. It alerted us perfectly synchronously and exactly the same way. The only issue I had was the constant prompting to switch to power-saving mode, which I have already raised in a new forum thread. Otherwise, the turn-by-turn navigation on the Venu 4 is perfect.

  • Would you mind testing something else? I created a course in Connect, I didn't import a GPX file. I did not get turn-by-turn the way your watch is showing. Mine only showed the distance to the destination and alerted me after I missed a turn. Would you try it with a course created in Connect and see if it behaves differently?

  • So, I finally figured out why it wasn't working for anyone else, but only for me. I did a more detailed test and tried creating a route both from maps.com (exporting the GPX and importing it into the Connect app > Venu 4) and by trying to create a map directly in the Connect app and sending it to the Venu 4. In both these cases, it doesn't show the turns, only the kilometers to the destination.

However, in my first test, I approached it differently: I created the route on my Venu X1 and then sent the map from the X1 to the V4 using Garmin Share. Only then did the navigation instructions work flawlessly on the V4.

For me, this isn't a problem since my wife will probably never create a route herself, and sending it from the X1 to the V4 is lightning fast and convenient. However, for users who only own a V4, this is an unsolvable problem.

The issue, therefore, is not with the V4 firmware, but with the Garmin Connect mobile app, which fails to transfer the turn-by-turn data when sending a course to the watch.

  • Thank you very much for all your tests and efforts!

After seeing your picture yesterday, I tried everything I could with GPX files, but of course without success.

It's not a problem with the v4 firmware, it's not a problem with Garmin Connect.

It's simply as Tracy mentioned, that contrary to the original advertising for €550, the v4 cannot do turn-by-turn navigation. End of story. And unfortunately, no matter how many people complain, it's not going to happen... So I'm going to return the watch. You can expect more for that kind of money.

(PS: I don't know why it works via Garmin Share from another watch, maybe Garmin doesn't want it anyway and will take it away from you again soon, I have no idea ;D )
