New Voice Assistant Issue

I've run into a Voice Assistant Issue I haven't seen reported before. I'm using a Venu 2 Plus with a Pixel 7 Pro, and the Voice Assistant on the watch is usually able to connect when I trigger it, but about half the time Google Assistant won't activate. The watch shows the microphone icon like it's supposed to, but instead of Assistant appearing on my phone, the screen will just flash black for a second. The phone shows the little green microphone icon at the top of the screen, but I get no response from Assistant.

Has anyone else run into this? I've already tried rebooting the phone and watch, removing/re-pairing the watch, and even factory resetting the watch, but it doesn't make a difference.

I'm running Android 14 on the phone and 17.04 on the watch.

  • Here's the project on Tasker Net. To make it work, you'll need to update the device name and MAC address in the "Garmin Connected" profile. This was developed on a Pixel 7 Pro, so it's possible you may have to tweak some stuff if you have a Non-Pixel phone.

  • Thank you! I have to try when back to my PC to use adb to set accessibility permissions for tasker to get this to work I learned. I'll report back when back from travel.

Also, I noticed that when I clear Google open by default I'm not seeing secondary app option anymore when I invoke the assistant from the watch on the first try.

    Thank you again.

  • Thanks for this detail.  I was able to get the profile and task set up so that if I run the Tasker Secondary from my app drawer it runs google assistant, but I'm having an issue with the "Clear Default Preferences" for the Google app.  The first time I tried this, I saw the "clear default preference" button, clicked it, and then when I launched voice assistant I could select tasker secondary as you said.  But that time around something wasn't working so I ended up setting it back to google assistant.  Now that I have other things working I'm trying to do that step again, and "clear default preferences" isn't listed.  If I go into the default assistant section of the settings, I can select tasker, but not tasker secondary.  Any thoughts?

  • Fwiw I was able to set up just the first part (secondary app -> tasker function) without any other changes on my phone and it works great!

  • This happened to me too. Try uninstalling all updates on the Google app on your phone and then invoke the assistant on your watch. Tasker secondary should come back as an option to choose

  • Also, I noticed that when I clear Google open by default I'm not seeing secondary app option anymore when I invoke the assistant from the watch on the first try.

See my post above - if you uninstall the Google app updates on your phone and re-invoke the assistant from you watch you should be able to choose it.

  • Yeah, just tried that. Still no luck. Will try again.

  • Maybe try clear data on the app in settings?

  • If you no longer have the option to use Tasker Secondary, you might have to re-enable it in Tasker Preferences, under the Action tab.

  • Bingo, beginner here obviously. That helped.

A lot better now, pretty robust. Haven't been able to break it yet :). So happy you contributed to this. Cheers

Edit: still going strong. I believe your tasker routine solved it.
