S2 Body Fat not accurate

  • Consent to be added to an internal case - yes, I consent
  • Consent to access your Garmin Connect account (if needed) -  yes, I consent
  • What device/test are you comparing your Index readings to - Tanita Inner Ccan
  • What does your Index S2 display vs what does your reference device display -  S2 Fat = 17.1 Tanita =10.6
  • What is your activity class set to, and is this appropriate for your activity level - 8 - Yes
  • I wished I read this topics before buying the scale S2. Now it's too late to return, leaving me with a over priced scale that isn't able to meassure body fat. It's a shame there are so much topics over a year old.

  • I just received mine and after my first weigh in I knew the body fat was off. Looks like mine will be going back. Very disappointed with Garmin

  • Wow, had the S2 in my cart then did one final Google search and somehow got here... won't be buying the scale until this has been addressed. Goodness gracious.

Just got mine today, so far the values seem to match with my visual comparison at least.

    1,88m

108kg (yep, need to get that down Smiley)

Activity level 8 (7days@45min running and 4days@30min HIIT) - so I am quite fit even though I am too heavy...

    Values are:
27% fat - yep fits visual fitting

    41kg muscle

    7kg bone

    53,1% water

I want to validate this with a caliper the next days - but so far I think it fits...

Nevertheless,  your last reply is 3 months old and the 2.12 update got pulled back - any updates for us?

  • Update on this post. Looks like it does firmware updates overnight. It now seems to be better in line with actual. I think I’ll be keeping it after all.

  • Maybe my scale has not been updated yet, but it's still totally off for me. I've been measuring almost daily with it and a huawei scale (same day, same time) and occasionally with other (tanita, xiaomi, calipers) and all the others put me in the high 12% to mid 13% body fat except the garmin which puts me at mid 17% to high 18%. If it's true that the garmin scale takes age into account (read that somewhere) than in my opinion thats the problem.

  • Just change your age( birth date the same changing the year..f.example 2005) in Garmin Connect before jumping onto the scale. Take a measure and you'll get that 12-13%. After that change again your age to real one. Nothing affected except you BF%(now it's more accurate)

I do this every day since I posted here the BF issue more than a year and a half ago and still waiting for a fix.

  • Good tip! But insane you've had to do that for over 18 months waiting for a fix. That really doesn't seem right at all.

  • Yeah! Insane but I haven't found any other way to get an accurate BF% considering that's one of the factors that calculates the fitness age and other firstbeat metrics.

  • Yea, I've been using activity level 10 and that seems to work for me, assuming I weigh myself around the same time each day and drink 3 cups of water before I weigh in. I had been comparing to a Withings Body+ for 2 weeks and at activity level 10 the body fat % was really close to each other. If I used activity level 9 though it was off by 3%.
