S2 Body Fat not accurate

  • Consent to be added to an internal case - yes, I consent
  • Consent to access your Garmin Connect account (if needed) -  yes, I consent
  • What device/test are you comparing your Index readings to - Tanita Inner Ccan
  • What does your Index S2 display vs what does your reference device display -  S2 Fat = 17.1 Tanita =10.6
  • What is your activity class set to, and is this appropriate for your activity level - 8 - Yes
  • Yesterday I purchased an Garmin index s2 to replace my body composition scale so I can tie that into the garmin eco system and was a bit dissapointed from the body fat % being off from what other scales  report (huawei smart scale, xiaomi mi body composition scale, also tested on tanita scale). All other scales have me in the mid to low 13 %, but garmin show me at 16-18%.   Come on Garmin, this issue with the body fat % is over 1 year old and still not resolved, step it up. Attaching pictures from my body type for visual  reference (as this may help). .

  • Joretogt - Almost exactly the same body as you and same measurements on Garmin - 16% to 18% but known to be around 13% from other measures.  Out of interest how old are you?  I am 42

  • I'm 48 :) . So at least it's consistent.

  • I have wildly inconsistent body fat measures by Index S2 in comparison to itself. For examples: Monday morning 23%, Tuesday morning 22%, Wednesday morning 28% and 10 minutes later after brushing my teeth it's 27%! Later same day dropped even more.

  • Very disappointed with my new Garmin S2 Smart Scale.  Having been recently diagnosed with osteopenia, I bought it because I wanted to be able to also track my bone mass.  The weight is accurate, but the body fat reading is clearly not right.  My old scale, a Taylor Body Fat scale, says my body fat is in the 25% to 26% range, which is also backed up with a caliper measurement.  New scale says 32%.  No way!!  Makes me also wonder about the bone mass reading.  I am going to return it.  Very Sad =(

  • I just stumbled on this thread.  I have owned an Index 2 scale for quite some time, as I bought it shortly after it was released.  Given that I had no means of comparison, I am somewhat gratified to read all of the comments posted here about the issue of inaccurate body fat %.  I have been pretty unhappy by the data reported by the scale.  It gives me a bit of comfort to be able to tell myself that my actual body fat percentage is probably lower than what the scale is reporting.  I do hope that a software solution can be made to fix this issue, as I would be very unhappy to be told that the only thing that I can do to find an accurate measurement while staying in the Garmin ecosystem is to purchase an Index 3 -- especially if I were not offered a substantial discount on that scale.

  • allow us to edit the body fat % and it will solve a ton of frustration... or read from apple health....

  • Thanks for the advice . I've had better luck while hydrating in the morning before weighing myself. I do still see fluctuations, but I think that's mainly because I wake up at different times during the week. When I wake up early to get a work out in, I have more body water, and on a rest day when I wake up later, I have less. No surprise there. One thing I am finding a bit difficult to understand though is how to determine actual muscle. 70% of muscle is water so should I include water in my estimation of muscle gain? I'm guessing yes, but I'm wondering what others do. Some days I get a 2 lb water gain and 2 lb muscle gain. I doubt all of that was actual muscle, but there's really no way to tell if it isn't either.

  • Hi Kevin, yesterday a lot of new Garmin watches received the Q3 update, when will the index s2 receive its software update (as you mentioned above it is now the next quarter )? Thanks Pascal
