Climb is aborted when Edge 840 detects slightest track / route deviation

Dear forum,

regarding this issue I did not find anything in the forum (maybe bad search, my apologies in this case).

When I create a gpx track, load it to connect, sync to Edge 840 and follow this track, the device displays a message "Climb started" (or similar). After saving the activity there appears a little mountain symbol in the Connect App which shows after clicking on it a summary of the clmb, with several stats.

Problem: As soon as the device detects during the ride a track deviation, this climb is obviously invalid and will not be shown anymore in the Connect app as climb. In my opinion there should be some room/range admitted, because the smallest deviation ruins the climb summary:

  • resting on the road's hard shoulder --> track deviation
  • losing GPS signal while drving through a tunnel (high number of Alpes' mountain passes) --> track deviation
  • taking a cycle lane parallel to the road  --> track deviation
  • taking wrong road at an intersection / roundabout --> track deviation
  • ...

I like this climb summary feature very much, but due to so many restrictions / problems it's hard to finish any climb succesfully according to Edges strict rules.

And on top of all, during the activity the device shows a pop up "climb accomlpished", although it does not count in Connect after saving... confusing.

Please Garmin fix this bad algorithm.

Thanks in advance,

KR Lupus
