Auto brightness too dark?

I just opened my new Edge 840 (NON-SOLAR) and updated to the newest firmware. I am comparing side by side on my desk with my Edge 530. The auto brightness seems quite a bit darker on the 840 compared to the 530, with both in Auto mode.

Curious if anyone else is seeing the same thing. Thanks

  • Realistically, Garmin should at least introduce several auto brightness settings. If it will get to the max brightness in low light that could improve readibility a lot. Now, I am unsure what to do. Yes, I could return the device to the store but there are no alternitives because otherwise it is perfect.

It's a shame that Garmin hasn't implemented a fix for this issue in over a year. @Garmin get to work

  • I don't know the difference between 840 and 530, but my previous 830 was indeed brighter in auto made than my new 840.

  • I have noticed the same. The 530 has a brighter screen. Garmin needs to fix this.

  • I recently bought an 840, and found the auto-brightness to be more

like auto-darkness.  I set it to 60% brightness, which is not too bright at night while still being readable at dusk.  But ideally one should be able to use auto-brightness with a slider so that it adjusts for ambient but still keeps my preference relative brightness level (like an iPhone)

  • What I found with my new 840 is that indoors, say when configuring screens, options etc. the screen seems quite dark, but outside it seems just right.

  • This is because you are not riding at night.

  • I have only done 6 rides with the 840. In the last 3, the sun set towards the end of the rides. Screen brightness was good. But I have never done completely at night riding, for that perhaps manual adjustment would be needed, I may try that to see.
