Sensor Dropout Feedback

We realize how important sensor data is to our customers and how frustrating it can be when there are issues with it. If you are experiencing these issues with sensor drop outs the engineering team would like to understand the following information to help understand the issue.

  1. What version of Edge 530/830 software are you using?
  2. How long into your ride did the issue occur?
  3. Did all of your sensors dropout at once or was it just one?
  4. Did the sensor connection(s) recover on their own?
  5. What sensors did you have connected with the issue occurred?
    1. What sensors were connected over BLE?
  1. Did you have your phone connected?
    1. Is it Android or iOS?
    2. What version of GCM do you have?
    3. Were you using LiveTrack?
  2. Please upload activity .FIT files from this occurred if possible.
  • Ugh. After many years of defending Garmin, I upgrade my Edge 800 to an 830 and get issues from day 1. The old Edge 800 was rock solid and never had any issues in its 8 years of abuse. Started using the 830 at software v5.50 and it's been intermittently dropping my power/cadence since the first ride, usually while going uphill to add insult to injury. I've tried removing the sensor and re-adding it. I've tried turning off Bluetooth and WiFi. Problem persists.

    1. Edge 830, using beta version 5.51 (also had problem using 5.50)
    2. 20 minutes, 40ish minutes (power meter dropouts ~10 seconds). Around 1:07ish dropped all sensors
    3. Drops power meter at least once per ride, dropped HR/power/speed together @ 1:07 mark this ride
    4. Yes, generally after 10-15 seconds
    5. 4iiii left power, Wahoo Tickr HRM (some rides, Garmin HRM-run), Trek duotrap speed/cadence, ALL ANT
    6. Yes. iOS 13.6, GCM version 4.33.0.21, LiveTrack off

    1. What version of Edge 530/830 software are you using? 530 - how do I check firmware?
    2. How long into your ride did the issue occur? Today was around 50 minutes
    3. Did all of your sensors dropout at once or was it just one? HRM, Cadence - speed displayed but not sure if from sensor or gps.
    4. Did the sensor connection(s) recover on their own? No, saved ride and started new ride.
    5. What sensors did you have connected with the issue occurred? Per above.
      1. What sensors were connected over BLE? All are connected via ant
    1. Did you have your phone connected? Yes
      1. Is it Android or iOS? iOS
      2. What version of GCM do you have? What is GCM?
      3. Were you using LiveTrack? No
    2. Please upload activity .FIT files from this occurred if possible. What are FIT files? Where’d do I find them and where to upload?
  • Just a guess, but the Trek duotrap seems to be a common theme in sensor issues with the 830 (also the GSC10, which is the old garmin combo speed/cadence).  I think your 4iiii has cadence?   You might try disabling the duotrap (so you will get speed from GPS) and see if that helps.

  • Alas, I did try disabling the duotrap sensor on Saturday and still had a bunch of power dropouts (HR worked fine though).

Actually starting to wonder if my issue is unique to how the 830 connects to the 4iiii. I've had it running indoors concurrently with TrainerRoad (laptop via bluetooth) a few times and when Garmin drops the 4iiii my laptop also does. Turning off the 830 makes that issue stop.

  • First ride with my new Edge 830 yesterday, and found this problem. No problem previously with my Fenix 5X Plus (same sensors).

    1. Edge 830 v. 5.50
    2. How long into your ride did the issue occur? 47:34
    3. Did all of your sensors dropout at once or was it just one? All dropped out at the same time, I first noticed the warning popup about lost connection with my mobile phone (which I thought was due to low battery on the iPhone, which was around 10-20%), then I realised that also all sensors were gone simultaneously.
    4. Did the sensor connection(s) recover on their own? No recovery until the end of the activity. Power off/on of Edge was necessary.
    5. What sensors did you have connected with the issue occurred?
      1. What sensors were connected over BLE? Garmin Speed Sensor 2, using BLE; Polar Heart Rate sensor (ANT+), SRAM AXS (ANT+)
    1. Did you have your phone connected? Yes, with low battery.
      1. Is it Android or iOS? IOS
      2. What version of GCM do you have?
      3. Were you using LiveTrack? Yes
    1. What version of Edge 530/830 software are you using? >> 6
    2. How long into your ride did the issue occur? >> 1 hour 45 mins
    3. Did all of your sensors dropout at once or was it just one? >> All
    4. Did the sensor connection(s) recover on their own? >> No
    5. What sensors did you have connected with the issue occurred? >> IPhone, Wahoo KiKR HR, Radar/Light
      1. What sensors were connected over BLE? >> Wahoo Cadence
    1. Did you have your phone connected? >> Yes
      1. Is it Android or iOS? >> IOS
      2. What version of GCM do you have? >> It updated to 4.34.1.1 after my ride, so whatever was the latest previous version
      3. Were you using LiveTrack? >> Yes
    2. Please upload activity .FIT files from this occurred if possible.

    3. Se cayó el de FC

4 Ojalá se hubiese conectado . Pues no .

5 En cuanto vi k cayó el de FC ya empecé a realizar todos los pasos ....

A el de FC y el de cadencia

    6. Teléfono conectado

            A Android

            B IMEI

C No sé lo puedo asegurar si estaba puesto el Livetrack . Generalmente lo conecto desde el principio, pero no le puedo asegurar al 100% si estaba puesto o no .

7 No entiendo muy bien la pregunta

  • Hi, I have a Powerpod V3 transmitting Ant+ to a Garmin 830 with Garmin 2 - Doped&Cadence sensor.

During the ride I stop for $0mins  then restart the ride. I turn the PowerPod back on but the Garmin does not find the Powerpod.

This happens randomly and I am not sure we're the problem lies. Can you help me.

  • After consistent errors with firmware 5.50 (reported above) I now did several rides using 6.00 firmware and didn't suffer any disconnects.
