Map of Europe is too big to install

As the title already says. The entire map of Europe is too large to install. Unfortunately, I can only select a part of Europe (e.g. Central Europe) and not additionally e.g. Western Europe. This is very unsatisfactory for people like me who live near the borders of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
I could well do without the inaccurate Climbpro.
So back to the alternative maps again.
Garmin, it's disappointing!

  • It's quite straightforward - I purchased the 540 for a bike packing trip from Calais to the Czech Rep and then discovered there seems to be no way my route can be covered, because there is not enough storage for both the western European and central European maps to be installed. This indicated by a blue information symbol beside some of the larger maps.

I've followed instructions from others here, but as yet nothing has been successful. It's pity my old Garmin died, because it offered a far greater area of map coverage under one map.

  • I am very sorry to hear that you are still having install issues with the Central and Western Europe maps. Since I am unable to recreate this myself, I was hoping you could pass along some information to help us look into this.

Would you be able to take a screenshot of what you see in Garmin Express while your 540 is connected? We specifically will need to see what information you see in the Manage Maps section. You may need to take multiple screenshots to capture all of the available maps since there will be a scrolling window in all likelihood.

If you could provide those screenshots by uploading them to us here, that would give us a better look into what may be causing this issue on your end.

  • Thanks for getting back to me. I have now uploaded 3 (hopefully informative) screenshots from my Garmin Express. However, I have responed to requests from Garmin on three previous occasions and the only response I've had is to inform me the problem (experienced by numerous other customers, as well as me) has been resolved, when this was not correct.

So, I hope you can help, but I'm not holding my breath.

  • Good afternoon.

Almost a month ago, I uploaded the information you requested and am still waiting for a response from Garmin. This was the third time I complied with a request for information. The first time I received a reply informing me the problem had been fixed - it hadn't and I've never had a reply to my second communication.

I must say, regretfully, that the quality of Garmin customer service is quote abysmal.

  • I purchased Edge 540 Solar last winter. It came originally with 1 solid Garmin Routable Cycle Map EU 2022.10 - that covers all the countries in all 3 regions (Eastern, Central, Western).

When I first saw this topic in spring, I checked in Garmin Express, what are map updated options, and saw the available updates are in 3 parts (Eastern, Central, Western) and out of those only 2 can be updated - so I understood I'd lose 3rd region on Edge if I update now. And I didn't update then.

Now, after Garmin Express software update in Windows, I noticed a possibility to load all 3 regions Eastern, Central, Western 2024.10 simultaneously, and decided to give it a try. First it went with an error and only 2 regions were uploaded to my Edge. Still after re-connect I saw it was possible to upload 3rd missing region, and it went out successfully - now I have all 3 regions Eastern, Central, Western on my 540 same time.

However, since my 540 is still just half-year in use, and I don't have a vast ride history on it, I suppose it has got more free space, compared to your other units in use several years of intense riding. Also, I removed my saved courses from device, before updating the maps. It resulted in 2,34 GB free space as it's displayed in Win File explorer. Now after a map update (replacing single file Eorope 2022.10 with 3 separate regions of same coverrage but new 2024.10) there's only 154 MB free space left on Edge. Still Trailforks map IMG is there that I may want to remove manually if I need more space.

So, problem solved now? Here's all 3 regions on Edge 540 (firmware 24.19), the complete Europe updated to 2024.10. However, even from the factory I had all Europe already in version 2022.10.

I suppose everyone here should be able to get the same. But maybe some of you will have to factory-reset your device to delete all the cache and ride history to free-up the valuable space.

    See some screenshots below.

  • Thank you for your post.

However, my 540 is only three months old and when purchased came with just the western Europe map installed and I have never been able to add, even a second map to the device.

I only require the western and central Europe areas fro a bikepacking trip, but nothing has been able to solve my problem. Garmin have told me on three occasions this problem has been fixed, but nothing has helped me. I'm beginning to think I have a faulty device.

  • Now I tried updating maps of Europe (all 3 regions) to latest version 2024.20 and it doesn't work for all 3 regions - Garmin Express says not enough space.

Solution is complex, but eventually I managed to load all 3 regions manually.

    1) Delete all IMG files from D:\Garmin ditrectory - such as D4713090A.img, D6016110A.img, D6017110A.img, D9499040A.img, or similar. names (2-3 digits can be different) These are typically of size 1-3 GB each.

    2) Delete the following DB files from D:\Garmin\SQL directory - such as D9941030A.db, D9942030A.db, D9943030A.db. These are typically 1-2 GB each. Do not delete MapRegionGrouping.db.

  • 3) Install with Garmin Express 1 (or 2 if space allows) Europe region. Go to above 2 folders and find such new IMG and DB files that appear after map installation, move files to your PC.  Repeat this step for all 3 Europe regions. Now you have all 3 Europe regions on your PC, congrats. I've got 3 DB files, but 4 img files for 3 regions in total. Check the total size of these files. You'll need to free-up space on your Edge to copy all these files into their respective folders, as in items 1-2 above.

    4) To free-up some space you may want to delete Trailforks map, it consists of 1 IMG and 1 DB files. Also you may want to go to D:\Garmin\SID directory, and delete old files from there, this may free-up 300-600 MB depending on how many files have accumulated there, you may check files dates, some of those are old.

    5) Surely, before deleting anything forwever, it's good idea to copy the original contents of these 3 folders to your PC, so if you need to restore something you'll have options.

An easier alternative to above method would be to just copy updated DB and IMG files from a bigger Edge model, like e.g. 1040, then you don't need to use Garmin Express at all.
