Map of Europe is too big to install

As the title already says. The entire map of Europe is too large to install. Unfortunately, I can only select a part of Europe (e.g. Central Europe) and not additionally e.g. Western Europe. This is very unsatisfactory for people like me who live near the borders of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
I could well do without the inaccurate Climbpro.
So back to the alternative maps again.
Garmin, it's disappointing!

  • Thanks, should I use Garmin OSM or Garmin Cycle? (both latin 1)

  • If you are using route files, it won’t matter what map you use. I generally use route files.

Some of the maps change the priority of cycleways so they are highways.  The idea is to use automobile routing (the cycleways are preferred).

All of the maps (including Garmin’s) use Openstreetmap (OSM) data.

Maybe, try the Garmin OSM one.

Some of the differences are the style/look of the map.

  • Same problem as everyone, disappointing that the first thing out of the box is a problem, and the solution is to delete the Garmin map and import one from a third party. It's illogical to have, say Denmark and Greece on the same map as they're so far apart. Yet not to have one map for France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Switzerland etc when many can ride over the borders. It'd be much better to be able to choose country by country the maps needed.

  • Most people don’t need to delete the Garmin map. Most of them can use a small(ish) custom map.

Garmin originally had fewer maps. I suspect Garmin split them up in such a way to be roughly the same size.

The map problem will go away by giving newer models more memory.

  • Ran into the same problem with my wife's new Edge 540. For anyone who finds this post in the future I give you a workaround if you only need 2 (maybe 3) EU zones. First download one map sector to the edge, then copy the larger (around 3 gigs) "Disc Image file" starting with the letter D in the base folder of the Garmin to your desktop. Then download the other map sector you need and afterwards copy the file from you desktop to the Edge. For me West (D9494030A) & East (D9493030A) fit on there with ease. Still, Garmin needs to make it possible to do this in the software itself (multiple checkmarks) to be honest...

  • I live in Germany near Strasbourg (France), just received a brand new 540 and can't have both France and Germany at the same time. I don't want to go to different websites get custom maps with I don't which paramaters slowing down my device or bits that I miss out since I didn't choose those parameters. This is ridiculous.

  • Hi Sonny, it is ridiculous indeed. However I found a workaround without custom maps. Check it in my comment above

  • ofc is ridiculous and is our fault for support our beloved company

  • Your workaround works like a charm! It still has 4 GB of extra space, which is more baffling that Garmin is using a dropdown and not checklist. Thanks a lot!

  • The point is not to do all these silly things and Garmin needs to address that.
