530 reboots during activity randomly

Having 530 updated to 9.50, attached 4iiii powermeter, hrm-pro chest strap, also I use BeerCount ConnectIQ field.

during a normal ride my garmin sometimes turn black and reboots.

I don't see any relations with the outside temperature (happened when outside was +30C or +12C too), length of the ride, or use of Navigation / Workout displays, it just started to reboot from time to time (I believe first time I saw it on 9.40 when I was riding 6h+)

I also tried to wipe - reset the device, didn't help.

  • Same problem: My 530 rebooted once some 1 hour or more into the last two activities. It had never done that before.

The only change I made before these two rides was to activate LiveTrack (with automatic start).

  • my 830 rebooted this weekend as well.

And the worst part is, that Garmin support just tells you to reset the device worst case. I did that and it still reboots every now and then.

They never even took any system diagnose or anything.

To me it feels like they don't really case about fixing the problem.

Instead they just try to treat the symptoms...

  • I've been having the same issue for a few years now and have tried all combinations of different sensors, using a workout loaded via the TrainingPeaks to Garmin Connect web service, following a course, turning off climbpro, different electronic mechs, different HRM's, different power meters, etc. It's super frustrating.

  • I think at least in my case I have the culprit figured out, it seems to be the connection to the mobile phone.

I had regular reboots since upgrading to software version 9.75, both on my Edge 530 and on my Edge 830. Tried two HRM Dual straps and one HRM Pro Plus, with all three the reboots continued to occur. Garmin Support also provided me with Beta 9.79 which seems to fix some sensor connectivity issues, but also with that version the reboots continued to occur.

Now I had three rides with the phone's Bluetooth disabled and so far no reboots.

In my case the reboots often happened at the same spots during my rides, and therefore I suspect that changes in quality or loss of cell service might be part of why the reboot happens.

  • I have had this error a few time and most of that times I lost my activities, including a 150km ride to Teide volcano on Tenerife. I was on 9.75 firmware.

I have now downgraded the firmware to 9.10

Garmin, are you reading this thread?

  • I am facing the same problem with 9.75. Every time I start an activity the device reboots more or less every 2 minutes. So I might also downgrade to 9.10. :/

  • I've submitted comments, pasted logs in beta forums, both more than once, while tagging Garmin employees.

Never a reply from Garmin. Never.

  • I talked to Garmin a few weeks ago and they confirmed to me that they are aware and working on this bug.

initially I had the suspicion that it was connected to using navigation on my device. It almost only crashed on longer rides when I had navigation active.

recently I can use navigation again and it didn’t crash on my the last few weeks

  • working on this bug

I kind of assume also that there are probably multiple bugs around that cause reboots. Which explains why some workarounds (like disabling the phone connection in my case) work for some folks and not for others.

  • Never a reply from Garmin. Never.

In my case I have been quite happy with the interaction with Garmin. They contacted me based on the posting in this thread and asked for the activity files and more information about the reboots.
