Varia, power and HR drop outs

Just upgraded to an Edge 530 from the 520, currently using the same sensors, a Varia RTL-510, Assioma Duo pedals and a Garmin HR sensor.
Firmware on 530 and radar/light are up to date but I’m getting drop outs on rides, happened twice today and I notice as it comes up saying light network dropped and then reconnects a few seconds later. Bit dangerous with the Varia as I rely on it for Radar use and to alert cars behind me as it’s my only rear light but it keeps dropping out.

  • There are some other threads for this here Edge 530 6.20 sensor drop - Edge 530 - Cycling - Garmin Forums and here Garmin 530 power drops - Edge 530 - Cycling - Garmin Forums.

In short, the 530 is a bit rubbish and has been through several software versions.

The problem affects me with my power meter, and I've come to the conclusion that the radio/antenna's in the 530 are of a poor design and are easily effected by interference. I've ridden similar loops by myself and in groups, and generally get more dropouts in groups. I still get dropouts when I'm on my own, but they arent consistent to a location, behaviour or situation. I can only assume that channel selection/changing, power levels or some other software issue is preventing data transmission, or that the 530's ability to cope with changes within these standard behaviours (which are built into the protocol) is not implemented correctly.

Note that people coming (or going back to) the 520 dont have the issue, nor do people with Wahoo's.

In your situation I wonder if 3 devices is causing more issues with a device (the 530) which isnt entirely up to the task.

  • Thanks for the reply, that’s really disappointing to hear, I love the Garmin radar but it’s basically pointless if I can rely on it. I couldn’t find any similar issues with the most recent firmware so was hoping it had been fixed and I may have had a faulty unit. Does it happen with the 1030?

  • I dont know. The 530 and 830 are essentially the same device save for the touchscreen, whereas the 1030 plus is obviously different with the internals due to the form factor, but may have the same chips.

  • Think I might have solved it! When setting up initially it asked me if I wanted to transfer existing sensors from my old 520, I said yes but it didn’t do it, so I had to add them manually anyway. I reset the 530 on Friday night, set it back up again as a new device and didn’t select yes to transfer existing sensors, I then set them all up manually and went for a 70 mile ride yesterday with no sensor drop outs. So maybe it was just confused and had two of each sensor in there somehow!

  • Having the same issue with my 530, FW V8.20.  Garmin HR duel strap gets dropped incessantly, Tacx Flux 2 smart trainer gets dropped incessantly, And doesn’t seem to make any difference whether one or both devices are connected. Will try your solution and report back. Thanks for posting!

  • This is a known issue for firmware 8.2!

  • Not to me!Grin Let me guess, there's no way to revert to the previous update where it DIDN'T have this issue?
