Navigation and roundabout

When navigating the instructions for roundabouts are driving me mad. I am in the uk so every prompt tells me to turn left as we go left round the roundabouts.. It’s only when I get close to the roundabout I can actually see on the map what exit to take.

Please fix this.

  • Roundabouts while not perfect work fine as long as I look at the map and use common sense. If it does not work the way you want it Wahoo has the bolt and Roam products. Personally I am fine with the way the 530 is implemented.

  • Can someone please tell me in simple terms (i'm not that technical):

    1. Where i can get free maps to replace garmin maps for navigation (if various options, your personal recommendation). I dont wish to create my own !

    2. How i go about downloading from a source and installing / actiavating onto the 530 unit

    3. How i can reverse the process if there's a problem / i'm too stupid to make work ie revert back to garmin maps. Maybe this is just moving files from specific folders and pasting new files into the "new files" folder.

Many thanks for any help in this.

  • 1. The easiest is probably: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

    2. Select map type (make sure you choose a route-able one) and pick your country.  Click on the download link. Download the gmapsupp zip file to your computer and extract the gmapsupp.img file in it.  Plug your Edge unit into the computer with a USB cable. Copy the gmapsup file to the \Garmin folder on the Edge unit folder. Unplug the Edge unit and go into the map settings for the profiles you use (profile settings->navigation->map->map information on my 830.  I assume it is similar on the 530).  Disable the Garmin cycle maps and enable the map you just put on the unit.  Eelect a map to enable/disable it.

    3. Re enable the Garmin maps in the map settings and disable the custom map.  You can delete the gmapsupp.img file on the Edge unit to remove it completely.

    It is pretty simple.

  • Thanks mate, that's really helpful !

When copying, i assume i have to drop in "new files" folder ?

Do you personally find that navigation works fine when using OSM ?

    Cheers

  • You don't need to put map files in the 'New Files' folder.  Navigation is fine with OSM maps.  Garmin cycle maps are also based on OSM data.

  • Thanks i'll give this a go in the next few days. I do agree with the OP that functioning maps are a part of a functioning device and is certainly a value that i feel i paid for. But if this solves it then that's fine for me. Any idea how often these are updated ? Can you sign up for update notifications ? it looked like quite a functional website (which i'm grateful for).

  • I'm not sure how often it is updated.  You would have to ask the site owner.

  • Hi again. Thanks for your help on this topic. I've followed your instructions. All pretty simple, to be fair. One final question, i have a lot of maps on the unit, seemingly. Do i disable everything apart from the new file ? I've disabled the ones with "garmin" in the name, but there's one called "INTL Standard Basemap, NR". Not sure if i should disable this or if its not relevant to this issue ? Thanks again MB

  • You only need to disable the Garmin cycle maps.  You can leave the basemap active.  Basically you don't want more than one routeable map covering the same areas active as that will confuse the unit.  The only routeable maps on the device are the Garmin cycle maps so if you add your own map coving some/all of the same area then you need to disable the Garmin cycle maps and leave your new one active.

  • Great. i owe you a beer.

@EveryoneElse i think it's poor that the unit doesn't work out of the box, but the fix above is extremely simple and also easy to reverse.

I just need to find some roundabouts in North London to test the unit (not that many near me i can think of!)
