Ride upload issue while connected to WiFI and Bluetooth

I’ve noticed that with WiFi and Bluetooth enabled if I get home from a ride the Garmin does not auto upload and shows sync failed. If I end my ride while riding home before I’m in range of my home WiFi the ride will upload without an issue. I assume that there is a problem uploading while connected to my home WiFi and connected to my iPhone. Anyone else seen this issue? I assume my work around is to just turn off WiFi..

  • If the phone is disabled, you can't use the GC app to upload your ride. You will have to go to your Edge 530 - while connected to WiFi - and choose to either upload that one ride or upload all new rides.

  • It happened to me again just a few minutes ago after my ride. Both phone and WiFi are enabled in the Edge 530. Tried several times to force the GC app to sync, it gave me a "Sync failed: Device connection error". I also tried uploading the ride from Edge 530. That also errored out. This is what I did to get around this problem:

    • Disable phone in Edge 530
    • Make sure Edge 530 is connected to WiFi.
    • In Edge 530, go to History and then choose Upload New Rides.
    • The previous step will upload any new ride to the Garmin Connect server over WiFI (skipping the GC app).
  • OK, I'm still having issue so tonight after it would not upload I checked the edge 530 status menu under Phone and it shows "searching" but my iPhone Xs Bluetooth menu shows the Garmin 530 twice (One shows connected and one shows disconnected). I started the whole process over by forgetting the connection in my Bluetooth menu, Forgetting the phone on the Garmin 530 phone menu, and deleting the device in Garmin Connect. Once I started the process over I noticed after I put the 530 in Bluetooth pairing mode and start the Garmin Connect "Add device" menu it will ask to Select An Accessory and I tap 530. It then shows "Bluetooth Pairing Request" and I tap pair and it goes to another screen that shows "Pairing Your Edge 530" and then another "Bluetooth Pairing Request" pops up and if you don't select to pair it will fail to complete the set up. DRIVING ME CRAZY

  • Those are normal steps that you are having to take. You have to select the pair option twice during the pairing process. Additionally the Edge will show two connections, one of which will stay disconnected unless it is transferring ride data.

  • I called Garmin support this morning and they said it should only ask once for pairing and should only show one device connection in my phone Bluetooth menu. The agent I spoke with was telling me I had to turn Bluetooth off and turn it on really fast when it ask for pairing so that it doesn't try to pair through the phone and through Garmin connect.

Any reason why I'm getting different answers from Garmin support?

  • Same here - can’t sync at all (have WiFi switched off). What a mess - not impressed!

Guess I’ll be advising friends to use wahoo after all

  • Unless Garmin has changed the way how its bike computers are being paired with phones in the Edge 530, as long as I can remember, the pairing process has always created two Bluetooth devices in the phone.

  • The second message from Garmin support is wrong.  The Edge computers have two different BT connections.  A BTLE connection (which is connected all the time) for settings/status/etc and a high power BT connection for fast ride uploading that is only connected during uploading.  So, you will get the BT pairing message twice during setup.  I have both the 530 and 1030 and they are both this way.

  • I’m not doubting what you are saying as I have not got my 530 yet, however I can’t say I’ve ever seen my 510 behave that way.

  • The dual BT/BLE connection came in after the 510.
