Backlight should come on with first touch and have no UI interaction

Hi everyone,

I wanted to see if anyone else finds the current backlight behavior annoying on the Edge 1050.

Right now, if I have the backlight timeout enabled and the screen goes dark to save battery, touching the screen does two things at once:

  1. It turns the light back on.
  2. It registers a click on whatever is under my finger. <-- unwanted

This is frustrating because I often accidentally click on random things, or open the home menu when all I want to do is see the map or my current stats.

I think the software needs a small update. When the backlight is off (due to timeout), the first touch should only wake up the screen. It should not press any buttons or interact with the map. (This is how smartphones work when they dim after no interaction.)

Does this bother anyone else? Hopefully, Garmin can fix this in a future update.

P.S. I found this related post from almost a year ago which is now locked: forums.garmin.com/.../backlight-timeout-first-touch-should-reignite-backlight

  • I'm eagerly awaiting this too. I've already asked Garmin support about it, but unfortunately I haven't received a reply.

  • I agree 100%.  Super annoying to have to then tap again to see the screen, and not too fast or the bell might go off (aka double tap).

However, if the intention is to double tap to get the bell (which is a newish feature), I think it would not be cool if I had to triple tap in that instance (when the screen was dark).   So there needs to be a little logic to handle this scenario.

  • Logic? Where do you think you are?

  • Additionally, I would like to know if anyone else is experiencing this with the latest update: when the screen timeout is active, touching the screen causes the backlight to turn on at a very low brightness and it takes 1–2 seconds to adjust to a level suitable for outdoor visibility. There is a very uncomfortable delay when the screen “wakes up” after being touched.
