Backlight Timeout first touch should reignite backlight?

While out riding in bright sunlight with sunglasses, you can only just make out the screen once the backlight has timed out

I think it would be helpful if the first touch of the screen, after the backlight is timed out, does NOT bring up the home menu, as it usually does, but just reignites the backlight.

I’ve submitted this to Garmin suggestions. Just floating the idea here for others’ thoughts?

  • Are you saying that there is no way to keep the display bright at ALL TIMES? Seems like a pain if you are using the map for routing but can't see it until you touch the screen.

  • I live in the Middle East and ride in bright sunlight with sunglasses all the time and have never at any time had an issue reading the screen.

  • You CAN set the backlight timeout to “stays on”. But that’s using battery unnecessarily in my opinion since I’m not constantly staring at the screen.

Thats not the point of my suggestion.

All I’m suggesting is that, a feature improvement might be, that,

when the back light is off. The first touch of the screen turns it on.

Yes the screen is visible, without the backlight on, but, with polarised sunglasses, on a bright sunny day, in Australia, it is noticeably harder to see when the back light is off than when it’s on. For example you want to check a detail on the map. So how do you make the backlight come on,

    Touch the screen.

    Which brings up the menu.

So you have to touch the screen again to get rid of the menu. Seems backwards to me.

  • @mcbit to my understanding , sunlight intensity varies all over the world and sometimes even throughout the day.

Similarly people might have varying levels of tint in their sunglasses. Some glassesmight be polarised, others not.

My post is not actually about the visibility of the screen per se.

Personally in my situation with my sunglasses, the screen without backlight is readable for just large format numbers, but if I want to scrutinise detail on the map, I need the backlight.

  • I agree, first touch should only turn the screen on. I believe thats how earlier edge models work.

  • Have you considered using the Garmin Remote control?

  • Yes. Again, good suggestion, but it does not achieve the result desired.

Similarly to touching the screen, the first button press of the remote, does, what the button press is programmed to do AND coincidentally turns the backlight on.

Thus, whatever you have intended to look at, with the backlight, has been changed, by the remote button, and requires undoing the action of the remote button, to get back to the thing you wanted to see.

Perhaps this is even an additional program modification required, and that is, that the first button press of the remote (or touch of the screen), when the backlight is off,  reignites the backlight.

  • By default, the programmable action key on the remote will simply turn the backlight on by pressing it for a few seconds. The action key can also be programed to turn on the backlight by not holding the key.It does not change screens. I just tested it on my Edge and it does exactly what you want. The remote is a great option that I use frequently.

  • cheracogoff, yes. You are most enlightened.

I have previously reprogrammed mine to

sound the bell. With short press, and

quick switch to map screen with long press.

I may have to re-evaluate my choices, but likewise a single quick press of the action button is very convenient for ringing the bell.

Ironically the long press actually achieves the prime function that I often desire, - backlight on and map.

Its a shame the lap key is not programmable as personally I find the lap key virtually superfluous.

Nothwithstanding, I stand by my initial post suggestion

  • The non programmable lap key is a waste. It should be programmable. I have never used it and I don't know of anyone else that uses it.If you are doing laps, the Edge can be set to time each lap automatically.
