Crashes on 13.13 - Specific Info Request

Hello all, we understand there are many members of the community here who are seeing crashes/freezes/reboots during activities after installing the latest update. This is being investigated internally, but we wanted to request some help from the community to aid that search.

We ask that responses be in the below format only to help us speed up the effort to look into this. If you have thoughts to share in general, please use the existing threads as we may delete posts that are not in the below format to keep this thread cleaner.

For users who are willing to offer information to help us look into crashes on 13.13, please respond in the below format with all requested information.

  • Do we have your permission to email you outside of the forums? (required to ask before we can do so)
  • Do we have your permission to view your Garmin Connect account if needed?
    • If so, can you please share dates where these errors have occurred if you saved and uploaded these activities
  • What were you doing when the freeze/crash/reboot occurred?
  • Were you navigating a course?
    • If so, was this course a .GPX, .FIT, or .TCX file?
    • What was the source of this course file? (sharing public links to this file is a great help if possible)
  • What map(s) do you have installed/enabled?
    • If this is a 3rd party map, please share information including website source, version number, regional coverage you are using.

Thank you in advance to anyone who is willing to share the above info. We may not need to reach out to everyone who responds to in this thread, but requiring permission to do so is required.

    • Yes, you get my permission for sending me emails.
    • You can also look in my Garmin connect account.
    • The errors happened on the ride on May 17
    • The device froze regularly and I restarted it each time by long pressing the standby button.
    • I did not navigate a course
    • The map I used is TopoActive Russia 2022, Western
  • I tested point 2 today over a distance of about 30km, and the freezing issue seems to be resolved. However, the ghost touch issue still remains

Meanwhil (after spending hours of troubleshooting and hopping mad on the trail :) I am able to reproduce the freeze. I have already isolated the cause at least in terms of maps. Before 13.13 I had 17 active maps: Trailforks, OpenMTB & OpenMTB Contours without issues. Now I only have ONE OpenMTB Map uploaded to the device and active (Spain: https://openmtbmap.org/?s2member_file_download=odbl/mtbspain_gmapsupp.7z) (but imo it doesn't matter which map, it happens with every openmtb map I used the last days especally France + Spain). I just start the device, go to my profile, to the map and then I 'lock' the map and 'scroll' around, change scale. It freezes quite immediately. I copied the debug logs from the device which shows imo (I'm not the expert :) some errors. I can send it to you.

I was not able to find  a pattern of the freezes while on the trail. I had the following scenarios (following a gpx track):

-I started the track and the device freezed 2-3 times just from the beginning and then it was fine almost until the end of the ride.

-I was on tour and in the middle of the tour it started freezing suddenly. Several restarts needed and then it was good for a while.

-It was at the end of the day where it worked more or less and then it was almost impossible to track as it freezed almost every 30 seconds.

I restarted as often as neccessary to get the track 'recorded'.

After that I sat down and isolated the issue as described in the beginning. Hope this helps.

Happy to assist. Please let me know.

However this new firmware obviously totally breaks the device. I really appreciate to have an instant hotfix OR enable downgrading firmware at least to the last version. I understand you do not want to support lots of versions however it should be a 'feature' and possible to choose at least two firmware versions in the settings menu. This would also address this and potential future issues.

Imo it is not acceptable to release such a buggy release and give the users not the option to revert to a working previous release.

  • this answer is a little bit off topic - but maybe it helps to find the culprit:

I‘m still on beta firmware 13.12 and I‘m using third party map OpenMTBMap.org - Alps.
I have no freezes using this map.
There must be a difference between beta 13.12 and official 13.13 regarding third party maps!

    • Do we have your permission to email you outside of the forums? (required to ask before we can do so)
      Yes
    • Do we have your permission to view your Garmin Connect account if needed?
      Yes

    • What map(s) do you have installed/enabled?
      • If this is a 3rd party map, please share information including website source, version number, regional coverage you are using.
        OpenMTBMap „Alps“
        https://openmtbmap.org/donate/odbl/download_alps_en.html

In addition I have installed new Garmin Topo Europe (all 3 parts), but not enabled.

        Enabled:
        -Basemap
        -Europe Central DEM 2025
        -Europe Central Geocode 2025
        -OpenMtbMap Alps

Maybe Garmin could release again the beta 13.12 as a quick fix now as 13.14 to at least solve the third party maps problem first.

    • What were you doing when the freeze/crash/reboot occurred: Stopped the ride, auto pause kicked in. System freeze 3 times. Reboot with long press power button.
    • Were you navigating a course?
      • No
    • What map(s) do you have installed/enabled?
      • OpenMTB Map of Bavaria and Alps

I did regression testing. With Auto Pause (at Stop) disabled I did not see any crash within the recordings and I did a 5 hour ride today.

  • After updating to version 13.13, I started experiencing ghost touch issues right on my very next ride.
The device randomly flips pages or keeps activating a specific data field without any user input.
As this continues, sometimes the Edge 1050 completely freezes or the touchscreen stops responding altogether.
I have already tried factory resets, removing IQ apps, and deleting maps, but nothing seems to fix the problem.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any solutions or official responses from Garmin?

  • Yes, you may e-mail me directly.

Yes, you may investigate my Garmin Connect account.

My problems happened on May 17th.

Soon after I started riding someone texted me and when I went to respond to them on my GPS, I discovered all the custom replies I had created beforehand were gone.  Only the pre-installed ones were present.  I selected one and it transmitted fine.  Everything else on the unit seemed to be working fine.  Then about an hour into my ride the unit froze completely.  I stopped and rebooted it while I ate lunch.  Before I was finished and ready to ride again the unit froze again.  I rebooted the unit several more times on my ride and each time it would only operate for about five minutes before it would freeze.  My custom text messages never appeared.  I confirmed they were still present in the app.

I was navigating a course I created in Garmin Connect and then downloaded to my unit.

I was using a custom may of the midwestern U. S. I created from OpenStreetMap.  The map had never given me problems.

I was doing a DSW (Daily Suggested Workout) cycling session when my Edge 1050 froze at minute 68!
It became completely unresponsive, and I could only restart it by holding down the power button!

After the reboot, it brought me back into the workout, but with zero resistance, so I had to manually reconfigure it during the session.

Only the factory-installed maps are on the device, and I’m not using any third-party apps or widgets etc!

Devices I was using during the session:

    • Wahoo Kickr Core (ANT+)

    • Polar H10 (Bluetooth)

    • Edge 1050
