Crashes on 13.13 - Specific Info Request

Hello all, we understand there are many members of the community here who are seeing crashes/freezes/reboots during activities after installing the latest update. This is being investigated internally, but we wanted to request some help from the community to aid that search.

We ask that responses be in the below format only to help us speed up the effort to look into this. If you have thoughts to share in general, please use the existing threads as we may delete posts that are not in the below format to keep this thread cleaner.

For users who are willing to offer information to help us look into crashes on 13.13, please respond in the below format with all requested information.

  • Do we have your permission to email you outside of the forums? (required to ask before we can do so)
  • Do we have your permission to view your Garmin Connect account if needed?
    • If so, can you please share dates where these errors have occurred if you saved and uploaded these activities
  • What were you doing when the freeze/crash/reboot occurred?
  • Were you navigating a course?
    • If so, was this course a .GPX, .FIT, or .TCX file?
    • What was the source of this course file? (sharing public links to this file is a great help if possible)
  • What map(s) do you have installed/enabled?
    • If this is a 3rd party map, please share information including website source, version number, regional coverage you are using.

Thank you in advance to anyone who is willing to share the above info. We may not need to reach out to everyone who responds to in this thread, but requiring permission to do so is required.

I just followed a navigation, which i had imported in basecamp from kml (google earth).

The source was a former track from Garmin Edge 1030 or 1050.

The map I used is from OpenMTBMaps.

    I opened this thread:

    Kind regards

Up to now two freezes / crashes:

    - during the first half of a short (2 km) activity

    - at the end of an activity before stopping

Freezing appeared on 13.13 only after the maps were updated to TopoActive Europe (18 GB)

    - I did not navigate a course

    - I only use the Garmin TopoActive map and have Lidar elevation contour lines installed

    - Connect IQ Datafields: CleanMapFields with 6 datafields on map screen, Gear 27

    - Sensors: Garmin Speed, Cadence, Remote, Epix 2 for heart rate, and Sram ASX gear shifter

      • The errors happened on the ride on May, 8th, starting 18:21 CEST.
    3. The freezes/crashes/reboots happened:
      • The first freezes and crashes happened during the ride following a track
      • A reboot happened when saving the activity
      • A freeze/crash happened afterwards when the Edge 1050 was still powered on after I waited for the upload
    4. Yes, I was using navigation  mode to follow a track
      • This track was a GPX file created with QMapShack 1.17.1 (saved without any GPX extensions), copied to the "NewFiles" folder on the Edge 1050. This should have been already done with FW 13.13 if I remember correct.
      • It was my own created track, it's not public available. But if wanted I can recreate it and send it via mail
    5. I had my own maps installed: TK-DACH-Basemap-noPOI from https://www.thkukuk.de/osm/

Since I had to lead several tours as TourGuide I removed my own Maps and only used the GARMIN maps after that. With this, without changes to the settings, I had no freezes/crashes/... anymore during the last > 200km.
I also uploaded the crash dumps on May, 9th, as asked for by GARMIN in the https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1050/411282/firmware-13-13-6-crashes-during-a-35km-ride thread which I started.

After updating to version 13.13, the touchscreen started registering false touches on its own, and the device began freezing frequently.

Before the update, the device worked perfectly without any issues.

I use GPX files for courses, which I upload through the Garmin Connect app on my phone.

I've just been riding around using a route that got automatically synced in via Komoot app on Edge 1050.

Freezes were almost 100% guaranteed if I deviated from track and 1050 tried to recalculate route but following track for long enough did the trick as well. Started with just a few freezes per hour but on subsequent rides it froze constantly every few turns. On top there were occasional reboots and 'out of memory' banners at the bottom of the screen.

    As for maps:

    1. garmin cycling map Eastern Europe (not updated bc. I did not know it got obsoleted)

    2. garmin topo active map Eastern Europe (updated one)

    3. https://download.bbbike.org/osm/garmin/region/europe/poland/poland.osm.garmin-openfietslite-latin1.zip

    5. https://osmapa-garmin.las.org.pl/products/OSMapaPLext-PODSTAWOWA-20250512V2.03_IMG.zip

Each time there was only this map + garmin worldwide base map enabled on the device. Since I've started debugging at least some scenarios were tested when it was the only map installed.

PS. I ride with popularity routing and ClimbPro disabled in case that matters.

  • * Yes, you get my permission for sending me emails.

    * You can also look in my Garmin connect account. These are the data from May 10.

    * The device froze regularly and I restarted it each time by long pressing the standby button.

Following the information from the forum, I renamed my own maps at home to *.img.bak. I don't want to have such an experience again on tour. However, for me, the Garmin maps are only of very limited use (contrast, representation of road surface types, readability, ...).

Unfortunately, renaming files during the tour is no longer possible with my Android mobile phone after switching to the media transfer protocol (MTP), as far as I know.

    * The route was created with Komoot and synchronized online with Garmin Connect. The course option "Turn Guidance" was activated on the Edge.

    * I use the maps from https://www.velomap.org, but with my own customized TYP-file. The map is installed on the PC in BaseCamp and I create the IMG file with Garmin MapInstall.

It was the card before version "velomap_germany_09.05.2025", unfortunately I don't know the date anymore. After uninstalling the card, the device seems to be working.

  • Today, I had a 7,7 km ride. The frist freeze oocured after 2.6 km during an activity. The second freeze happened after 6.2 km just when I paused the activity. The third freeze occured after 6.3 km during the activity I just restarted. Because of the freezes I lost about 1 km of recorded activity.

The whole trip lastet 26 minutes but only 5 intensity minutes were recorded, which is not plausible.

    And again:

Freezing appeared on 13.13 only after the maps were updated to TopoActive Europe (18 GB)

    - I did not navigate a course

    - I only use the Garmin TopoActive map and have Lidar elevation contour lines installed

    - Connect IQ Datafields: CleanMapFields with 6 datafields on map screen, Gear 27

Made a ride on 2025.05.12 after installing 13.13

    Openfietsmap-Benelux active on the 1050.

Ride was a GPX-track which, as I usually do, was created in Basecamp / Openfietsmap-Benelux.

After about 8 kms I noticed that all indications (speed, cadence, HR, navigation) did not change anymore.

Tried to switch off the 1050 in the normal way, but without result. Had to keep the on/off button pressed for about 20 secs to reboot the unit.

Continued the ride, but all indications froze again within minutes and kept on doing so.

Turned around and cycled home without navigation.

At home I removed Openfietsmap from the 1050 and rode the same GPX-track (created in Basecamp / Openfietsmap) with

TopActive Europe West 2025.10 active on the 1050.

    No crashes, no freezes.

Made another track of 100 kms with Basecamp / Openfietsmap-BNL and rode that track today 2025.05.17 with

TopActive Europe West 2025.10 active on the 1050 active.

    No crashes, no freezes.

  • Yes you can email me.

Yes you can view my connect account.

I was removing the 1050 from the computer after using the USB cable to charge and update it when it entered a reboot loop.

I was not navigating a course.

    Maps are below.
