Touchscreen freezes 1050

First ride witth the new 1050.

TouchScreen totaly freezes for complete ride. Even when powered of and on several times.

No reaction or whatever  with gloves off.

Taken of the mount in home everything seems te be allright temperature outside was 4 degrees above freezing point

Didnt have this with the 1040 solar, 1030 and the older models.

What tofdo now?

  • I second that ! 2 totally different issues.

The freezing problems already occured with some 1040 units, it's not something new.

With the 1050 and this thread, it's the unresponsive touchscreen under low temperature that is reported here. So it's kind of misleading for everybody to talk about freezing units here. Please make a new thread!

  • I am using the Garmin Edge 1050. After updating to version 13.13, the touchscreen started behaving erratically on its own. I have performed several factory resets, removed all IQ apps, and even deleted the maps, but the issue still persists. Over time, the frequency of this problem has increased to the point where the device is nearly unusable.

When this issue occurs, the touchscreen does not respond properly to my touch, and it continuously registers phantom touches on a specific area of the screen. If I press the power button to turn off the display and turn it back on again, it works correctly for a few seconds, but the problem quickly returns.

Even when I lock the screen during an activity, I receive random "Touch detected" messages as if the device is being touched on its own.

I am extremely disappointed that a device at this price point delivers such poor quality. I have been using Garmin products for over 10 years, but it’s clear that the basic software stability of this device is severely lacking.

  • I expect better. Third ride with new 1050 (FW13.13) and up to now perfect. Started getting low on battery today so went to Battery Saver Mode... freeze after freeze after freeze with the only way of un-freezing by doing a long press of the power button. And what's more, despite navigation still working, the second part of my ride after my mid-ride stop was a straight line to the end of the ride. Distance and elevation correct though but no HR/Power or Cadence recorded despite me having seen these displayed on the screen.

By the way - cool to warm conditions today (not cold).

One of my reasons for delaying getting an Edge 1050 was so that Garmin had ironed out stupid issues like this.

Garmin - time to get this sorted.

    • I have had my 1050 for a few weeks. On my last 2 long rides (3 and 4 hours in) the screen completely locked. Holding the power button did nothing. I had to hold 2 buttons to force a reset. The ride track did not resume, but i could save it and start a new ride. I am on  firmware 13.13. It was about 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Same her with latest Firmware 13.13. Edge 1050 is 10 days old.

Yesterday I took a first ride of about 100km. I started in the morning.

    • Bring my bike outside the garage and mounted the warm Edge 1050, outside temperature ~16° Celsius, set timer on => OK
    • Drove 3 km to the train main station, display was freezed (no response to finger taps) at station => NOT OK
    • Went into the train, did some test in the train, holding Edge 1050 in my hand, so Edge 1050 warmed up => OK
    • Arrived at destination station, start my tour with new timer. Edge 1050 was still warm => OK
    • After 2-3 kilometers ==> Display was freezes (no response to finger taps), outside temperature ~15-16 °Celsius => NOT OK
    • During the morning after 20km, temperatures raised up to 20-23 °Celsius => OK till end of the tour.

I tried to reproduces it this morning. I bring a warm Edge 1050 from inside my room to my balcony, outside temperature ~13-14 °Celsius. When Edge cooled down to a shown Edge 1050 temperatures of ~°16 Celsius then the Display freezes, no response to finger taps.

For my this a VERY CRITICAL general system related issue. For my this is not acceptable and my Edge 1050 appears to a "Nice weather device only". I will send it back to my dealer and I will wait if GARMIN will and can provide a solution for it.

  • Good luck mate!

I had this issue since early December 2024. I was one of the 1st adopters of the 1050, bough in July 2024. I have reported this issue since December, then I have discovered this forum and saw more people having this problem. I did many reproductions and summited videos and any additional info the support requested. At first I though this is going to get fixed... I waited for about two months having terrible problems during training, Imaging training up on the mountain, the temperature was about 8c and doing VO2 Max intervals, suddenly I get a message covering half my screen saying that a sensor is low on battery. I was trying to press the button while changing intervals every 30' seconds and I couldn't see what watts I was hitting for about 30 minutes because I didn't want to stop my training.

Moving forward when I realized that support is not coming any time soon I went ahead and bought the 1040 that has a touch screen that works with pressure instead of electrostatic response. So far as you can imagine, 750€ for the 1050 and another 540 for the 1040...

After waiting and waiting and waiting for months, I decided to get rid of the device and I sold it for almost half the money I purchased it losing 350€ + 25€ for the case.

I reported my frustration to garmin and the response was "We are sorry, hope we can assist you further in the future". Not even a coupon for their joke garmin+ for all this debacle I went through. As you all can understand by this the aftersales is a joke and good luck to everyone.

  • Wow... Seems that I am not alone... I feel very betrayed by a company I support since 2015 when I got my forerunner and later in 2016 my first edge device. I feel very sorry for everyone going through this issue because it damages your mentality when training... I train 6 days a week and the last thing I need to bother about is my head unit...

  • Hello and thanks for your report.
This sounds different from other experiences in this thread - it sounds as if you're seeing touch inputs registered when the display is not in use and you are not interacting with the display.
