Paused Ride Loss of Data

I'm using my 1050 (FW 9.11) to record two rides with my family that involved an intermediate stop for coffee one time and a quick meal the other.  With the 1040 I would stop the ride and power it off. At the conclusion of the break, I would power it back on and start the ride and it would pick off where I left off.  At the conclusion all the data would be there.

I did the same thing with my 1050 but it loses the first half of the ride data with the exception of elapsed time and total distance.  The map shows me starting at the point I resumed the ride, and all ride data - power, HR, cadence, etc., prior to the restart of the 1050 is lost.  The upload to Strava was only the second half of the rides.

Has anyone else experienced this or is this an error on my part?

  • I'm having the exact same problem. Ride to work, pause, turn off Edge 1050, turn it back on to ride home. Save the ride at the end. I get the message that ride details could not be saved or some equivalent message and then only the ride home is uploaded. This is really annoying and only started happening a few weeks ago. Please fix this!

  • Hey , can I reach out to you via email to collect some additional details? I'd use the email associated with your forum account, no need to post it here.

It may help others here to clarify, are you stopping your activity timer and then powering off the Edge 1050 with the 'Power Off' menu option?
The other option you could be describing is pausing the activity and putting the Edge to sleep (not a full power off).

  • Thanks for the prompt reply Clayton. So I’ve been doing this the same way for years now on my 1030, 1040 and now 1050. Start ride on the Edge, commute to work, get to work, hit the stop/ pause button, do not save the ride but instead do a full power off (not sleep) in order to preserve battery. Then when I am ready to ride home I power on the device, the first half of the ride is still displayed and I hit start again. Get home, press stop and save ride. No issues for years doing this until the last 3 weeks or so. At first I thought I must have pressed the wrong buttons somehow but yesterday I was very deliberate and pressed each button carefully. The screen then showed “unable to display ride details” or something close to that and a spinning icon. When I escape out of that screen it backs out to a new ride with zero miles. Each time I check Strava only the 2nd half of the ride shows up. Interestingly, I just checked my Garmin Connect and the whole ride distance is displayed for yesterday. Well that’s just weird! Thanks for your help!

  • Just had an entire ride fail to upload, since the first section seems to contain an error...
Judging by the manual upload it should be on your servers (it added a (1) to the file name).
I managed to upload a "fixed" one, but that flat out cut off around 15 minutes of my ride :/

It would seem the problem is getting worse over time in my case.

  • Yes I've had the same issue several times. Stop ride power off at the cafe, power back on resume ride, but when I've saved the ride at the end of the day only the last part is shown with incomplete data except total time of ride. I now just leave it on until the very end

  • Stop ride power off at the cafe, power back on resume ride, but when I've saved the ride at the end of the day only the last part is shown with incomplete data except total time of ride.

Yes! That‘s exactly what‘s happening. And it is easy to reproduce!

  •  how did you "fix" the ride that you were able to upload manually?

Did you receive an error message on the Edge or in Connect when the ride failed to upload?
I suspect this is a separate error, but if you can reproduce this or experience multiple activities failing to upload let me know.

The error being reported and investigated here is for some Edge 1050 cycling activities that upload successfully to Garmin Connect but are not displaying all GPS data correctly or missing some details when viewed on a 3rd party platform like Strava.

  • So out of morbid curiosity I decided to look at the map when resuming my ride today.
That's god darned monday's second part!
I also had an issue where the map would be in night colors, only a reboot fixed that (this picture was afterwards, since I thought I saw something odd.

    To answer your question.
    I used fitfileviewer dot com.

Well, I posted here, since the first part of the ride was again, having issues. And since it seems the issue is increasing in frequency and severity.....
It's almost every single time now that when I pause it due to work or entering the store with my bike in a rack that the first part somehow gets corrupted and it seems especially prevalent on the most recent firmware, do you have a link to the last release so we could downgrade? (I assume it works the same way as the fenix watches, already had to do that with a more or less abandoned fenix 7 pro, since that too has software issues)

I'll post a video in a new post, since it seems it doesn't want to insert due to the picture....
Not sure if it's related to this, or if it's yet again something new...

  • Well, that video won't upload anymore :/ seemed to work initially, but 50 freaking MB seems to be too much for a site.... how will that go when 8K images become the standard.....
    Ah, well.
So when I resumed that ride, the blue line would render between my live location and my real starting point (before the pause), whilst also still showing the false starting point (where monday's second part started, as shown in the image in the first post). This line would seemingly go in a straight line right to the real start and constantly update.
