Edge 1040 course points auto-deleted??

Hello,

Something strange happened with course points on the Edge 1040.
I created on Garmin Connect a course with special course points (waterstops, lunchbreak etc)  which was send to my device.

Checked whether all points we loaded correctly which was the fact, so I turned off the Edge 1040.

I travelled to the start location and turned on the device. Over 60 % of the course pointed we (auto-?)deleted.
Only few were still in the device.

As a backup i had the GPX of the waypoint loaded as well, so not a real issue, but I am wondering:

How come that the course point of the Gamin Connect route have dissapeared?
If this is common use, than using GC combined with cours points is of no-use at all.

Does anyone has an idea?

Kind regards,

Ronald

  • I had an issue (search back for course points) not showing when imported but, can you clarify, yours were created within GC on a full browser or within the app?

  • I created my course on a full browser.

    Please see the link:

Funny, but strange: not all course points were deleted, however too many.
I thought the idea would be that these point should be of help while riding, however, like this, it's of nu use at all.
    And moreover: it's not consistant.

    No idea how come...

  • I see the issue. For some reason the early course points have a distance of zero so will not show. looks like something went wrong in the creation process

  • Thanks for the reply @!
What makes me wonder is the following:

I created the course on the website Garmin Connect and noted not all waypoint to be loaded.
Adjusted the course and inserted the missing waypoints: which could explain the distance of zero?

But then after completing, saving and sending the course to the Edge 1040 Solar I turned on the deice to check whether all waypints  were there. I confirm this was OK, so I thought: Happy Life!

But overnight and after travelling to the starting point I turned on the device again and then note that 60% of the waypoints have been deleted.

And that makes me sick: one thinks all in order, but then when time comes, one is noted of the fact that the waypints are gone. The only thing that changed was the position of where I  started my device: 1x because of checking and 1x after travelling 200 km.

How come? And better: how to solve.

BTW: the tour was excellent and I survived the 360km tour even without these waypoints, but it simply canoot be that the Edge 1040 SOLAR is not trustworthy.

  • I have opened a ticket with Garmin on this. The course points may show on the Edge if you are not on the course, but once you are on the course all those with a distance of zero would be treated as though you had already past them and hence would not show.

The issues is somewhere in Garmin Connect with the course creation.

  • I don't use GC much for course creation, is there a list or table of course points that can be viewed in GC or just the individual points on the map (or download / view the Fit file?)

Previously this "zero distance" issue has cropped up where people import or download the course in GPX format and GC creates "Waypoints" with 0 distance which then get transposed into Locations on the Edge.

Ronald, you didn't import a GPX with "waypoints" and edit from there?

  • Honestly a good point @L.Rouge, as that indeed is more or less the case, yes.
I didn't realize that that could be an important detail, so my apologies for that.

Here below the entire workaround of this special event and how the course was created:

    1) Searched on Google Earth for waypoints (names of foreign countries in the Netherlands.

Dropped these waypoints in  MAPSOURCE which I still use.
(very oldskool, but for me still one of the best programs for creating special events as it's offline, so no strange behaviour in route changes etc)

    2) drawed routes both on STRAVA (because of its heatmaps)  and KOMOOT (because of its undergroun/pavement/not ride-able etc breakdown) to compare the best possible track for road race.

    3) downloaded GPX files to compare
    4) adjusted KOMOOT course online where needed
    5) downloaded final KOMOOT GPX and added the Waypoints in Mapsource
    6) uploaded this final course (GPX)  including waypoints to Garmin Connect
    7) noted that not all waypints were loaded in GC
    8) added the missing Waypoints in GC and saved the file
    9) send the file to the Edge 1040 SOLAR

    10) checked waypoint on the device (setting 'course points ON') by turning device on
    11) noted all waypoints (course points) were available
    12) turned off the device (because all OK) and travelled to starting point
    13) turned on the device and noted 60% of waypoint are gone

Hope this breakdown claries for you and  @I am curious about your findings.
    Kind regards,
    Ronald

  • I think it’s going to end in the same origins as my issue… that unless the course points are on exact vertices of the route, so that there are common coordinates in the GPS course points section AND the track section then they will display as zero when starting the course.  They preview OK in Garmin Connect but not when course started on device. Because you can’t start course until at the start it’s hard to preview the issue without downloading and viewing in table as  did above

  • The strange behaviour makes me wonder the most.

at first all waypoint are visible on the device: I started navigating (with no recording an activity) from my house and the entire list of waypoints (check each point) was visible in the screen 'COURSE POINTS' on the Edge 1040 SOLAR, but disappeared after travelling.

So this makes the use of course points close to useless.

Alternatively I can drop the waypoints in the course gpx, but then there's no pop-up when arriving at the waypoints (which was the goal of this exercise seen I dropped waypoints exactly where a street name was to be expected.

  • Cn you share the GPX with waypointsembedded, then it’s possible to check the wpt/course points are coincident as try/track course vertices.  The possible bug is GArmin Connect needs to improve the user experience to either show points in different colours (so they can be fixed) if they do not lie exactly on the course or snap or create new vertices… anything such that the user gets to see the waypoints on device when actually out on the course/event
