Weather cap charge door continues to open

On the 1040 the weather cap appears to open even after pressing it closed as tightly as possible before a ride.

Are anyone else experiencing this? Is it possible to replace the door without changing the entire device?

I've had a 1040 plus and never experienced the door opening mid ride like this.

  • I contacted Garmin and they sent me a new cap. Since swapping the cap it's stayed firmly shut during a ride Slight smile

  • Back order only added a week or two for me. It was fiddly because you have to hold the door steady so the weight of it doesn’t pull the screw out of position, while holding the garmin - a vise or a friend might help - and the screwdriver, but it’snot THAT difficult. Electronics screwdriver absolutely invaluable for this.

edit: sorry just realised I’m replying to an old post. Good old gmail.

  • Yes same here, the closure is very poor, no click when closed way to loose

  • I had mine replaced last year. During the winter months I keep the Edge 1040 in a silicone case. This helps keep the door closed. Now with better drier ( hopefully ) days on the way I ditch the silicone case but lo and behold the door once again continually opens as soon as any vibration or road chatter starts.
Very bad design and I’ve resorted to taping a bit of sellotape on it to keep it shut during a ride. Not a great look for their flagship head unit.

  • I received the replacement kit. When I removed the door from my Garmin it had two of the washers. The replacement kit came with two of the washers. I reinstalled with the two replacement washers. The installation video from Garmin appears to use only one of the washers.
Does anyone know if the two washers are required or will one do the job as well??Thank You

  • Same problem here, worse, when it rains there is water which seeps into the usb-c holder, I have to blow and wait for it to dry before plugging in the cable.
Couldn't this cap be the cause of some people's problems with overheating when charging? With a non-watertight cap moisture in the usb-c port risks making a short circuit, I encountered this problem and Garmin replaced my 1040, but if the origin of the problem is not corrected it's fine to repeat.
Garmin should completely review the design and material of this cap and give us the benefit of it.
The old edge 705 had a rubber and perfectly waterproof cap while its location under the GPS was conducive to projection and the varia used the same cap principle as the edge 705.
Garmin is regressing in all areas, design, hardware reliability, software ergonomics and responsiveness of updates...
Garmin respect your customers who buy overpriced GPS units!

  • I have the same problems , contact customer service they said were mailing the replacement part , never received , I have a lot of garming devices but this story really bother me , can’t believe they cannot fixed after you spend $700 … very bad !

  • Contact Garmin , they said they will be sending replacement parts , 6 months and still waiting the part , very bad !

  • I got the replacement. It such a poor design to begin with. I’m taking mine to a jewler. My hands are simple too big.

  • Yes, it's a design disaster.  I got really annoyed fitting the new one on .  The connection to the device is very weak.  I  stuck a piece of electrical tape over the cover so I can avoid this annoyance.
