Weather cap charge door continues to open

On the 1040 the weather cap appears to open even after pressing it closed as tightly as possible before a ride.

Are anyone else experiencing this? Is it possible to replace the door without changing the entire device?

I've had a 1040 plus and never experienced the door opening mid ride like this.

  • Nope, but I must admit the cap is a *** design... A rubber cap like on the Varia would be much better.

  • Can’t say I’ve had any problems with mine …. Whilst not brilliant in design it’s better than some out there ;)

  • Yes.  Does it on mine. But it does it on a particular stem mount I have.  Tends to do it downhill at speed when I hit a rough bit of road. I think where the Mount is I’ll bet it gets a bit of negative vacuum pressure in the space between the cover and the front of the stem and coupled with a bit of vibration it comes open.

On another bike with a standard Garmin stem it never happens. I think the Garmin stem has better vibration damping for a start at also slightly higher behind the front of the stem.

  • Yes, have the same issue.  Device new to me and opens after about 10 mins riding.  Very annoying.

  • if you have the lanyard installed, do you have a picture of how it sits next to the USB cover?

  • Hi Garmin-Maeve, I’ve just came across this thread and am suffering the same problem. Every time I go over a bump or even just normal road chatter the USB door just falls open. I am continuously having to close it mid-ride but it just keeps opening. I am using the supplied lanyard and I have attached a few photos which show that it doesn’t interfere with the opening / closing mechanism. I have also rode without the lanyard and the same issue occurs.
Hoping you can be of some assistance.

  • Hi thank you for the photos and description! Can I reach out to you directly?

  • Hi Maeve. Yes that’s ok.

  • This is definitely a design issue.  But I would say it all depends on the Mount you use and where it is located.  I found the cover would open constantly when on a bike that uses a Giant stem out front mount.  Due to the nature of the mount I think it has two possible reasons why the cover opens. The first is it doesn’t have the rubber shock absorbing you get with a standard Garmin handlebar mount. Second I think is because it’s located in line and close to the front of the stem it creates maybe a slight negative air pressure in the space between the back of the device and front of stem.

I can say this with some confidence as when the Garmin was mounted on that bike the cover would open all the time. At the moment throughout winter I’ve been using it on two other bikes, both with standard Garmin handlebar mounts and not once has the cover opened.

I’ve also since got the silicone cover for the Garmin. I am thinking that might create a different airflow which may help, but I’ve yet to try that on the bike with the stem mount.
