Weather cap charge door continues to open

On the 1040 the weather cap appears to open even after pressing it closed as tightly as possible before a ride.

Are anyone else experiencing this? Is it possible to replace the door without changing the entire device?

I've had a 1040 plus and never experienced the door opening mid ride like this.

  • Update:  so today I rode the bike with the stem mount. I hit bumps and it was very windy. Cover stayed in place. Difference is I now have the silicone cover.  I suspect that’s changed the airflow and helping keep the cover shut. Can’t be sure as only one ride, but in a place it always seemed to come out it didn’t today.

  • Yeah, I was just going to write this. On my new 1040solar, the door is loose but the bumper holds it in place so it doesn’t pop open.

This was actually my first impression of the 1040 when I pulled it out of the box…the door seemed very easy to open with the tiniest of effort. I had to open and close it a couple of times to make sure it wasn’t me. Right out of the box, the consumer notices/experiences a potential issue. Not great for such a high end device.

In contrast, the explore 2’s door worked fine. As I pulled it out of the box, I inspected the device (other than the white plastic it was fine but that’s a personal preference), I opened and closed the door then I went straight to to powering it up.

Based on cost alone, my experience should be switched but in retrospect, no one deserves a poorly designed door.

Why not a rubber door like the varia has? Or better yet, standardized the doors on these devices so you only design one great door and use it on all bike computers? It’s as if no one is bridging the design teams.

  • I have the same issue. Very disturbing. And in rain if will one day fail. Plugging in charger usb is allready difficult.
garmin ?  What do you recommend? Cannwe get a replacement gate that works and does the job ? This is going to kill so many 1040’s

  • Get the silicone case. Seriously mine did it all the time until I did. I think it’s actually something to do with airflow and the case changes that and stops it opening. It would do it on an out front stem mount with a small air gap behind the Garmin and front of stem. It never happened on the normal Garmin mount, but that was not in the same position behind the stem (different bike)

  • I agree, drives me crazy.l! Not even particularly bad roads, just minor bumps and it opens and sit there rattling. I just cannot be so that I have to use a bulky and ugly silicone to keep the cover closed?!
Makes you wonder if Garmin never use their own products or if they don’t take pride in design. The cap appears easy to replace so I hereby STRONGLY urge Garmin to pick up on the critic and does something to fix it!

  • I have sent you a message.

  • So is it doing it with the standard supplied Garmin mount or a third party one?  Mine would only do it with a 3rd party stem front mount. Never did it with the Garmin mount.

  • Maeve, I have exactly the same issue. Using the 1040 on the standard Specialized SL7 stem mount and the USB port cover is continually opening

  • Dear All ,

same problem and is quite annoying to hear also the noise when you are up to speed of the cap hanging on the back of the device , this is not lock into it and even if I'm a super fan of Garmin this design must be updated , I'm not happy and if for any reason there will be a water damage or problem do to this rear cap unclosing I'm expecting Garmin taking care , as usually always have done , but I need to figure out how to stop this , either remove the cover or find something to block when close , any advice ?
