Weather cap charge door continues to open

On the 1040 the weather cap appears to open even after pressing it closed as tightly as possible before a ride.

Are anyone else experiencing this? Is it possible to replace the door without changing the entire device?

I've had a 1040 plus and never experienced the door opening mid ride like this.

  • I contacted Garmin and they shipped me a new weather cap. Pretty easy to fit and I can't recall the new one coming loose yet

  • Read my post. Seriously since I fitted the standard silicone cover it has never happened again - ever.  I always buy them anyway.  It just took me longer this time as they were not available when I bought it. Solar one’s actually come with them. Yes they are expensive for a genuine Garmin one, but I’ve not doubt others probably work.

  • Had the same problem, got a new cap from Garmin that looked very similar but did snap in better and solved the problem for me at least, even at high speed on rough pavement.

My best advice; snap a picture of your cap/port to verify nothing else is obstructing it (like the lanyard etc) and send to Garmin. My experience is that they are quite responsive and helpful (although they should have posted it themself long time ago since they’re clearly aware…)

  • Yeah I just spoke to someone and am getting the improved cap. Out of stock in the UK until October though.

  • Terribly designed. Mine popped out. Talked to Garmin who knew right away. They ordered a new weather cap for me which is backordered - telling. Now try screwing that small screw back in - the rep admitted that doing so will not be easy.

  • Did you have to take out the small screw first and fit the washers to it.

  • This one? I just took it out to test and it’s awkward. Easy enough to access but has already taken some weathering, probably thanks to the loose cap. I think you want a decent screwdriver (I tried with a pretty cheap one, won’t be using that next time) - plus it screws into plastic which is always a recipe for chewing up the thread in the hole if you’re not really careful.

  • yeah - they are sending  a new weathercap  and screws. So hope you have tiny hands. i'm thinking a magnetic screwdriver would really help with holding the screw while  trying to place it. . I am wondering - does this look intact. The washers are still there.

    it.

  • I'm 192cm and have pretty big hands, it was ok.

That looks intact to me. I think that rubber grommet just sits in a hollow in the plastic housing of the unit. Only there to let the cap retract & turn out of the way of the port without falling out completely as it's trapped by a little plastic circle moulded next to the screw.

  • My door will vibrate open on rough roads. I put a small dab of earthquake putty on a side of the door to fix the issue.
