All sensors disconnected at once

Five minutes into my first ride with this new device, all of the external sensors disconnected at once and would not reconnect.  The sensors included a Poalr HRM, a SRAM AXS shifters and a SRAM Quarq power meter.

This is a variation of a long term, never solved problem on the Edge 1030 Plus, where  the sensors would disconnect and reconnect, leading to lots of beeps and messages on the older unit.

When this happened on my Edge 1040 all the data fields displaying external data went blank and did not recover.  The data fields provided by the 1040 like temperature, time, distance and duration continued to be displayed directly. As noted, this was just minutes into the first ride with the new device. The device is completely up to date - I made sure that it was updated via Garmin Express before I started the ride. This is extremely disappointing that Garmin released a device with serious bugs that render it basically unusable.

  • i dont take garmins part but most of the issues can be from the sensors itself

i have pwm with cadence, hr, speed sensor, varia radar, phone connected and only at the begining I had connects and disconnects loops for radar

Did you tried to delete all sensors and re pair them?

can you pair just few sensors(for example power meter and shifters) and check the behaviour

can you pair one sensor per activity and then delete and pair another sensor on the  next activity?

    then try to make combinations

do you have any sensors both on BT and ant+ ?

  • If I have to delete all the sensors nd reconnect them, why does Garmin provide the feature of  migrating the sensors form the old device to the new one?  I have several bikes exact with bike specific sensors.  Having to manually reset all of them will be a significant task.
They should not all disconnect like this EVER.  I should not have to do this kind of ridiculous debugging of software for Garmin.  I apologize for expecting a feature that Garmin provides to actually work out of the box.

  • Also, why should I have to factory reset a device before I have even used it once, or just after the first (failed) to use it.  It came to me in factory state, I updated it with Garmin's software, I migrated settings with Garmin's migration tools.  The follow up to these things should not be a full reset and manual reconfig the first day it is used.

  • That’s not the Problem. I tryed my first ride with many resets and without any IQ Datafields it was good. When I got an IQ Datafield all sensors lost and you can’t add new sensors with ant+.

  • Do you use any CIQ data fields? If so, that seems to be a common cause of the described problem, see the other thread named "Bug: Loosing all sensor connection"..

The current concensus seems to be that IQ apps which use any sensor result in the sensor hub crashing?

  • When it comes down to it, I really don't care that it is CIQ apps, or whatever the problem is.  The real issue is that Garmin has terrible software development practices that lead to repeated releases with significant bugs.  I have some CIQ apps I can disable, but why should I have to do this?  Either CIQ is a stable platform for app development, or it isn't and Garmin doesn't mind breaking an entire class of features they specifically market as one of the benefits of their devices.
The real issue is that this is not the first time their new very expensive devices are basically useless out of the box.  It happens with every device release.

  • I fully agree :-)

Garmin is and always was horrible at release management, and currently neither the 1040 nor CIQ can be considered "stable" or "reliable". (Also no idea why nobody actually realized the problem that any CIQ app using any sensor will break the device, seems like a rather obvious flaw.)

Anyway, disabling CIQ apps would serve as a crappy workaround for now, allowing for at least some limited use of the device until thise whole mess gets eventually fixed... Shrug

  • Hi,

I am also experiencing the same issue. My sensors are Shimano Di2, Favero DUO, Varia RTL515, and Garmin HR Strap. I have one CIQ datafield installed, mapdashboard. Everything wlse is stock, updated t0 FW 12.11

  • I had the same issue until I uninstalled mapdashboard, it seems CIQ fields are not working properly with the 1040 for now.

  • Thanks. I noted this potential issuie on another thread, "Bug: Losing all sensor connection".. I uninstalled "mapdashboard" and all appears to be good. For anyone else, you need to remove the reference to mapdashboard on your map page before it will uninstall.

A big relief, but a huge amount of frustration today with my new toy!!!
