The edge 1040: An absolute disaster of bugs

My list of bugs so far:

  • Random crashes
  • Random freezing on pull down menu
  • Refusing to sync rides today, WIFI and Bluetooth.
  • Doesn't correctly show charging, when it is
  • Strava segment pops up even when set not to
  • Segment plays you lose sound when you exit or ride past it
  • If stopping activity on a segment, the summary map shows the segment, not the ride you did
  • Di2, doesn't play tones for chainring shift next
  • Can't remove daily suggested workouts
  • ALL sensors dropped a few seconds into ride and wont reconnect no mater what i do (will have to try factory reset)
  • Sometimes really slow on front screen
  • Twice now ive come to turn it on and its refused, having to hold the button down 30 seconds to get it to wake up.

I'm on version 12.11. There are more, ive forgotten because there are just so many. Its really unacceptable.

  • Do you have link to update list which was released for normal version now a beta?

  • I apologize, but I'm not positive I understand the question.

Information on the public beta can be found here. We expect to move this to a production release soon, but wanted to make the beta available as soon as possible.

  • Please refrain from aggressive posts to other users. Continuing this could result in a temporary or permanent ban from the forums.

  • Yes. I know.

You share website link to BETA version where possible download and we can see list of changes.
I mean similar website but not for BETA version.
On the forum we can see v.12.11 with list of changes. But my question is:

Is available Garmin official website where can I see this same info like here about public version which are dedicated for 1040?

  • This is the way all Garmin beta versions used to work- you download the zip file listed in the announcement message in the forum, unzip the folder on your computer, plug your 1040 into the computer, copy the GUPDATE.GCD file into the \Garmin folder on your 1040, disconnect the 1040 from the computer.  The 1040 will install the new software and reboot.  The changes are listed in the announcement.  This is a relatively safe process.  I have never had a serious problem with beta software on multiple watches and my 1030.  If there is a big problem you can always reinstall the old version using the same process.

  • My wife has non-Solar Edge 1040 with firmware 12.11. On Saturday I paired her Rally RS100 power meter pedals to the Edge via ANT+, and updated the firmware of the pedals to the latest version via the Edge. After that she rode a 219 km trip, and power was recorded ok. The next day she returned back and rode another 205 km. This time the 1040 had lost connection to the Rally pedals, and no power nor cadence were recorded.

I was able to pair the pedals with a simple sensors -> find, but it really bummed me out that something this fundamental didn't work correctly and reliably with the Edge 1040.

On a positive side the battery life was phenomenal: 9h + 7h45m used less than 40% of the battery. I had configured all satellites + multiband in the global settings, but I'm not sure if that was actually used. I noticed that the Road profile had a factory default "GPS + GLONASS" which may have overridden the global setting I made. But interestingly "GPS + GLONASS" is not an option I can choose myself. If I change it to something else, the menus don't offer the "GPS + GLONASS" combination at all. So this seems to be another bug in the system.

  • Don't know how many people are unable to read the information provided by Garmin and other users and seem to ignore it?! A BETA version is available that fixes most of the issues!?!?

I'm a professional programmer myself and I know how easy it is to overlook an angle bracket. I've had to look for a space myself for a whole day (or first find out that it's a space which is causing the error... Find a space in several pages of code yourself!).

I think IQ data fields are difficult to debug. After all, these are developed by third parties. Accordingly, tests will probably not have been carried out there at all or the devices for tests will not have them, since there are no "standard" Garmin functions. I think a mistake that would be possible and hopefully Garmin will not make again. Of course, it would be better to better shield the IQ functions from the main system so that they cannot have such an influence.

And last but not least, you can't compare this to an iPhone or Android.
The development team is significantly smaller here! And it still has to cover a large number of devices that are still to be supported. One reason why the system in the base has not changed.
I think Garmin should invest more money here.

  • It's baffling that people would try to defend Garmin's mistakes. If it is a low-end device, I can forgive the bugs. But god! It's the flagship product that commands the most expensive price. People normally have top expectation and I think it's totally acceptable.

Garmin has once again delivered a product with loads of bugs only to be found by end-users, not the private beta testers (if any, but should be) before product release. If I pay this much of money for the advertised UNIQUE features, I'd expect it works out of the box.
