any insight on maybe a new 1040 or whatever release date?

Anybody know anything on when a new Flagship Edge is coming out?

Good points.  I'm trying not to rush to another brand just to discover their issues.  I have corrected Trailforks data for my entire state by snapping lines together.  Many, many hours spent.  I haven't had a chance to test this yet.  The OSM data seemed to be snapped properly already.  I "think" this is what caused the issues.  But when I travel to Pisgah in the Appalachians, I prefer to have routing on for larger trail networks, as well as in my state when doing mixed surface adventure racing with gravel roads and trails.  The other reason is that "Climb Pro" requires an active route.  I really hope they get it right this time.  I'd think they can add some logic to the Edge to say if the endpoints are 20-30 feet off on trails, they should be routable.

  • For me, it's an easy decision. I have been using the Edge 1000 since 2013, and have been through a few replacements. Garmin has an out-of-warranty replacement program where I paid about $100.00 to replace it each time so long as I sent the old one back. They don't even care about the condition. My last one got dropped so many times, the screen was barely readable through all the cracks, and they still sent me another one for $100.00. This one I made sure to keep in pristine condition, so when the 1040 releases, I can sell my 1000 on eBay or something to offset the cost of the new unit. I never upgraded to the 1030 or the 1030 Plus, because I couldn't sell my last one. LOL it was so shot, only Garmin would take it in trade. But this time around, it's an easy upgrade decision, plus my buddy owns a local bike shop and can order it for me wholesale.

  • I’ve always thought that phones will eventually take over the bike computer market. But, battery life and screen visability in sunlight have to be improved. I have a iphone12 and the screen is terrible in sunlight. With sunglasses and without.

  • I never said that I found the price justified, no need to distort my words. I also did not say that it was good or not well to use your smartphone instead of a dedicated GPS device, I said that the smartphone was not suitable for all uses.

I didn't say Garmin was perfect either, I don't work for them and I even mentioned Wahoo. But in many respects a dedicated GPS device like Garmin or Wahoo is more suitable than a smartphone.

And then the smartphone is our life insurance when you are in difficulty, putting your only way to communicate with the outside on your handlebars is in my opinion a big mistake.

I spare you the problems of autonomy, overheating or conversely extreme cold which will drain the battery of a smartphone. It's impossible to go on a long outing with a smartphone without taking a power bank. Unless you leave it in your pocket, screen off. Besides I sometimes do when I am getting in discovery mode outputs or I refuse GPS to concentrate on my environment and my senses.

My expectation if there is a 1040 (I have an 830), would be a USB-C port. I don't need Turn By Turn and rerouting.

To redirect the Edge 1030 Plus offers more options than the 830 and 530, but I have the 830. Personally when I'm wrong, I use the map to show me the best path to take. I know of no GPS that offers a truly reliable redirection system, there are often inconsistencies related to the actual context.

  • Yes I forgot seen this argument, and I remember with polarizing glasses according to the orientation of the smartphone screen becomes invisible ... the joke

  • + Netflix in PIP and Apple Music with bluetooth earbud.

  • That is how LCD screens work, unless they have a circular polarizer, in which case there is 50% attenuation in all orientations. There may be an opportunity with OLEDs.

Why do polarized sunglasses make it difficult to see LCD screens? (allaboutvision.com)

Easily tested by looking at your TV, monitor, or laptop while wearing polarized glasses, and tipping your head side to side.

When developers really mess up (I'm looking at you, Mr. Toyota), I can't see my car display with my glasses on.

  • 7hr ride from a phone at 36C (though on inspection, it's actually 37C)

  • Lets streamline the discussion

This is Edge 1040 new release date topic , and maybe new functionality guessing , and not (i)Phone versus Garmin debate .

For all of you that are you debating that phone is good, better , you can open another topic

  • Let's guess which bug is going to be carried forward to 1040?

    1. Cannot disable Virtual Partner.
    2. Broken Navigation.
    3. Screen halo.

Edit: excuse me, but maybe we should be more positive to keep the mood up while waiting for the release. Let's vote for the bug that you think is going to be fixed in 1040 Slight smile
